If Tillman comes up Johnson goes back down. Johnson is here to be a long man while Gonzo gets rest. I like Tillman on Weds. because with Jake scheduled then he definitely could go on Thursday. That would still leave us Friday to cover and keep Tillman from pitching against LAA. Maybe they send Tillman back down after he pitches Weds. and bring Britton up for Friday, or they go with Eveland and Gonzo on Friday.

This has been mentioned in the past, but I wouldn't be opposed to a "5 and-a-half" man rotation.

I don't think it will happen, but I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Tillman getting the 4th spot, and Gonzo and Johnson having each other's backs for the 5th spot. If Gonzo pitched well for 4 or 5 innings, Johnson could come in and finish the game, and even if Gonzo bombed in less than 3 innings, Johnson could still come in and at least bridge the gap until the late innings. Or Johnson could start, and Gonzo could be the proverbial 6th man in the rotation.

Of course, something like this would probably require Duquette and company to simply go with the best 25 players that we have in Baltimore and Norfolk, and to not continue carrying a certain player because of their salary.

Wouldn't that be more like a 4 and 1/2 man rotation? :D

Is it possible there are trade talks involving him?

This is what I immediately thought when I heard he was scratched. I also thought maybe they weren't bringing him up so that he could increase his value with strong starts in AAA. I just asked Roch and Britt so we will see. Mel Antonen just said that there were some Twins scouts in the park over the weekend and that he has heard that the O's have interest in Francisco Liriano, Wandy Rodriquez and Jason Vargas.

Arrieta imploded vs Anaheim the last time out there, 4 dominant innings and then fell apart. It might be good for him to face Seattle.

I was at that start, and had a pretty good view of his pitches. I cannot for the life of me figure out how he does so little with so much talent. His curveball was unhittable, and he was throwing it for strikes.

He fell apart after that throwing error in the 5th.

I was at the game as well. He looked phenomenal and then completely and utterly unraveled. It hurt to watch.

Arrieta's one of the few pitchers I can remember watching who's made me think "he might throw a no-hitter" after the first inning, only to make me think "he might not make it past the fourth" an inning or two later.

    • I’d call 2015 pretty excellent.  It got him a $161 mm contract. 2017 forward was way worse than meh.  Put it this way: if Davis had retired after 2016, he would have had 17.4 rWAR.  He went -5.7 rWAR from there.  That’s incredibly rare.
    • Mike Elias would be my first priority.
    • I could care less. I don't understand why this board is so obsessed with this topic. Most players will still be here for a few years and let's enjoy them while they're here. Don't get me wrong, if an extension happens, I will be happy. It takes two to tango and there are many good reasons both sides may not want to (at least right now).  Burnes - has made it clear he is going to be a free agent (the reason he signed with Boras) so including him is a waste of time Gunnar - signed with Boras, so that tells me he's not really thinking about extensions. Even if he is, good chance he waits until Soto signs and that's where he starts the discussions. He seems like an ultra competitive person who's probably not looking to give any discounts. Rumor is they may be working on this one - be happy to be wrong. Holliday - signed with Boras and hasn't proven he can hit MLB pitching Bradish - need to wait to see if he gets through the season and status of his elbow GRod - he's a pitcher who throws the ball violently - no rush Adley - I believe this may be the one that could get done, he's older and his value is a more defined  Westburg / Cowser - still improving, until performance/value more defined, risk on both sides Orioles / Rubenstein - new owners, still probably working on defining cash flows, wouldn't be surprised they have ME working on multiple scenarios outlining salary $ and wins tradeoffs. We could be talking close to a billion dollars to sign all the above. I'm just going to enjoy and root for the team in the now, and worry about next year's team in the off-season.
    • You can’t extend Ying without Yang!
    • No chance he turns it down.
    • Also, the bold move right now would be Holliday...
    • It depends on what your goals are. If being a team with a winning record and competing for a possible playoff birth is you acceptable goal in you 4 of Adley and year 3 of Gunnar then that rotation will probably be okay.  But if you have any designs on winning a championship then that rotation is not likely to be nearly talented enough to win a World Series unless you have added a Mason Miller to pair with Felix Bautista.
