Who's your 4th bench guy?

Assuming Roberts has a healthy ST, and Betemit is DH against RHP, then you have a bench of: Casilla UTIF, Teagarden BuC, Reimold RH DH/LF, and ??? Whose this guy and why? Pearce, Flaherty, Valencia, Ishikawa, Jackson, Robinson, other? Who has options and who doesn't? My pick would be Robinson for his speed and defense.

I suspect Flaherty, due to his power potential, might be the UTIF not Casilla but the competition is sure to fierce in ST. I don't enough about these guys to make a prediction.

My assumption is that Casilla is the Oriole starting second baseman.

Pearce is off the 40 man roster. As is Jackson and Ishikawa. So by default, I would assume Valencia, who has options. Or Robinson who does not.

I don't think Roberts can play the field to Buck's standard. He stated that would be a benchmark.

This is being obtuse though, the opening post pretty clearly assumes that Roberts is the starting second baseman, and asks for opinions based on that premise. I wouldn't be surprised if that was not the case, but it is irrelevant, per the question being asked.

Oh. Yeah, I just don't see that even if he has a good spring. But sure. I cheated.

Great question. You could make a case for any of the six you mentioned. Assuming your premise of Roberts being healthy, I think they'll pick Valencia (positional flexibilty). However, I'd like to see Pearce or Ishikawa for a little extra pop. Also, options do matter so we need to take those into account.

Here are the six candidates with option status:

Valencia - 1 option left

Flaherty - 3 options left

Ishikawa - 1 option left (not currently on 40-man roster)

Pearce - 0 options left (not currently on 40-man roster)

Robinson - 0 options left

Jackson - need approval to send to minors (not currently on 40-man roster)

I do agree though, I did not answer the question. I just get the feeling that Buck won't sacrifice a week this year to see what BRob has. No matter the pricetag.

I won't say that I'm happy about it, but out of those names listed, I would say Valencia gets the fourth spot. I know Roch has mentioned several times that the O's would likely go with a platoon of Betemit and Valencia as the team's starting DH if a middle of the order bat wasn't obtained before the beginning of the year.

I don't see Flaherty and Casilla both making the roster if Roberts is healthy. Casilla would likely be the backup middle infielder while Flaherty goes to Norfolk.

Of course, a lot can happen during Spring Training...

    • We can do that. But we will still have the same problem next year.
    • Eh, if Angelos decides he doesn't want to spend at all, then this is all probably futile. That said, it would still leave open the possibility of trading for a hired gun for a pennant drive, similar to the Dodgers picking up Manny without giving up any of their top 10 prospects.
    • Good question/scenario to pose. I believe that middle relief is a need for us because we really only have 3 reliable relievers. Bautista, Cano, and half of Coulombe and half of Baker...lol But in seriousness, we need to be leading in games for that even to matter which means our starter has to get through 5/6 and be better than theirs. I don't really like that proposition against elite teams. In the playoffs, you are going to have to win some lower scoring games. I'm not convinced that our starters can hold down the opposition for our relief pitching to even matter. (beyond maybe Wells for 5 innings). We had a SUPER ELITE BP with Miller, Brach, O'Day, and Britton and it didn't really matter in the end. That was because our O couldn't score, this time it will probably be because our starters can't be effective for long enough. I'm not against BP help whatsoever, but I think an impact starter is needed also. And if I had to rank the two, I would place starting pitcher as the greater need.
    • I'll just add, in the MLB.com highlights they have her call of the Josh Lester RBI single, and she misses what happened the botched cutoff that allowed the third run to score from first. She just stops paying attention to the play and is caught off guard when the third run scores.  https://www.mlb.com/gameday/orioles-vs-giants/2023/06/04/717890/final/wrap
    • Every time I ask the same question you seem to ignore it and not answer it, so let me state it as plainly as I know how. Of MIN, TEX, NY, HOU, TB; which team would you prefer the O's rotation to theirs? Which of those teams would be willing to trade their best 3/4 starters for ours (the players that can be pencilled in to start a playoff series)? Do you follow/keep track of those teams and who they have or just the O's?
    • Is it too early (and possibly too crazy) to suggest that they may be a better road team than they are at home?
