The idea of possibly re-signing Upton can't enter into the thinking of whether you trade Harvey for 1 year of Upton. If you want, you can enter the bidding for Upton when he is a free agent next winter, whether he is on your team in 2015 or not. Upton is a 1 year rental. You don't trade a prospect like Harvey for that, IMO.

Keep in mind, though, that it gives you the ability to QO him, this giving you an advantage in signing him as well as fall-back compensation potentially.

If Upton has the kind of potential that warrants a top prospect for one year, when he hits FA after that one year, a QO isn't going to scare any team away. Unless you think Cuddyer is more desirable to teams than Upton will be.

As has already been stated in this thread, Upton's value is roughly a half-win in value above his salary plus the value of a comp pick. That is nowhere near the value of a prospect like Harvey. I'm not saying I wouldn't trade for Upton. I'm saying that I'm not going to grossly overpay for Upton.

Oh I wasn't disputing that at all. I guess that's my bad. I was really only talking about the first half of your first sentence. There is some thought to an increased ability to resign him. That being said I don't want to deal Harvey for him. Again, that's my bad communication-wise.

Bob Nightengale from USA Today thinks the Orioles will obtain Justin and be able to sign him. He's from Norfolk and would like to play closer to his hometown.

Not really close, is it? 238 miles. Atlanta is 595 miles. I mean, it is closer, yes, but I don't really get it.

Don't get me wrong, he is a nice 1 year rental, and I'd love to have him. The comp pick will be nice when he leaves, too. I see Nightengale thinks we can sign him. Can't bank on that, though.

What is the cost? That's the key.

I think I feel better trading our valued prospects for a guy who likely would extend.

I seriously doubt it is the money. They offered this much to Cruz. The issue has to be the Braves asking price. Probably Gausman.

Exactly.

Your not giving that away for a rental. Atlanta will want to get the best young controllable arm/arms they can or a controllable 2B. Likely that would mean KG, Bundy, Harvey, Schoop type player plus another guy who is a lesser prospect.
