Melo Coming Back to Maryland for Sophomore season?

Recommended Posts

If all it would take would be a first round commitment from any team, I think it's likely he goes, because he would almost certainly be a 1st round pick.

That's what I'm thinking but apparently it's a very deep draft at his position. I was earlier thinking he'd go 20-25 range right now but sounds like it would be closer to 30 due to depth at that position, so it's just not clear either way.

Speaking of Peters, not like he looked great last year, but could've used his ball handling against WVU. Incoming Brantley is listed as a point guard, anyone know if his ball handling is a strength?

"Solid" ball handling and has run some pretty talented teams pretty well.

Danny Miller & Mike Jones (who?) were top 20 players (does Tamir Goodman count?). Justin Anderson was committed before Gary retired. Garrison (!), Ibekwe, & Melo top 30. John Gilchrist, Augustus Gilchrist, Sean Mosely, Faust, Shaq Cleare, Roddy Peters & Dion Wiley all were top 40 (all depending on the service). But we also knew all too well what Gary's relationship was like with recruiting & the AAU circuit & I think many of us took a certain pride in the type of guys Williams was actually developing (underrated & overachieving). And well yes looking at that list is pretty depressing considering almost all of them failed to live up to expectations.

I always loved the Williams era teams for what they represented. Now that's not to say I wouldn't mind a Diamond type player here & there, but I'd also rather have the hard working types that have really made themselves into great players.

Also the prior 20 years history leads me to believe that Stone isn't coming here but yeah that would be a hell of a team if he proves me wrong.

I agree. But none of those were top 10 or top 5 players...except Moses who never showed to College Park. He was the number 1 prospect in America that year. It remains to be seen if Turgeon can catch a big fish or not.

If he can keep the team winning they will come to us.

But if Stone decides on CP I feel like I will have to go out and buy riot gear for next April.

Trimble hasn't appeared in any mock draft for next year. Forget the first round, he wasn't even listed as being drafted at all. These are just mock drafts, but if he isn't even being considered as being drafted, then I highly doubt he would be drafted in the first round. In fact, DraftExpress listed him as their 36th best NBA prospect, for 2016.

He'll be back and it's the right decision. Next year will be his breakout year and he will be drafted in the first round in 2016.

That's because the mock draft sites project him to declare in 2016. Trust me, if Melo leaves this season he is a sure bet to get drafted. The only question is whether it will be in the first or second round. NBAdraft.net has him going 20th overall next season. I think there is a good chance he could sneak into the first round if he left this season, but it's no guarantee so let's hope he stays.

Melo is a below the rim teenager. When you draft a player, you only have sure control of him for up to four years. If you're an NBA team who needs a point guard, do you draft Melo? Or do you draft an older, more physically imposing, more athletically explosive, bigger player; and go get your point guard through free agency.

Maybe you take Melo. But you won't guarantee him before he declares that you are going to take him. The way the system works, the NBA scouts want a player like Melo to stay in college.

He's already had his breakout year - he made All Big-10 1st team. If he comes back, he will come back as a pre season All American choice because of what he already did.

Would be great to see Melo for another year. I had to watch the MD/WVU in a casino in vegas and was really worried about what happened to him, could only see him clutching his head. No sound and no internet service, was worried it was a worse injury (not that a concussion is good), so glad he is healthy and can keep playing ball. Just hope its for us next year.

The Diamond Stone news has to make it a little harder for Melo to leave right? I think the situation in the NBA would have to be even a little more perfect for Melo to leave and pass up this opportunity. He needed to work on his "point guard stats" and now he'll get a great opportunity for more assists.
