    • Yes, sign him up today!
    • I'd do it, but only if Manny stays healthy the rest of 2015
    • No, too rich/risky for my blood

The longer this season goes, the more its abundantly clear that this franchise must extend Manny Machado. There are no questions. Sell the naming rights to Manny or Manny's favorite sponsor if you must. Manny Machado Field at Air Jordan Rawling's Gold Glove Park. Whatever, just get it done. This is not the guy you want to see putting up a top 40 MLB career on another team.

Pick one of these deals to offer Manny, 2.9 Million? 695,000? Or is that a lefty reliever who gets to put his name on the park?

Sure I would, but he'll never sign that deal, IMO. He's looking at some nice arbitration payouts for the next two years, then at an 8-10 year deal for somewhere around $30M/yr (IMO). He'll probably get an opt-out after year 3 or 4 so he can re-negotiate another big contract while he's still in his prime. No way he takes an AAV of $21M/year.

Edit: I just realized the start date of this thread, which explains the 21M AAV premise. Still, Manny's getting $30M/AAV IMO.

Realize that this thread was started in the first half of 2015. So, (1) the first year of the deal I was proposing was the year we are currently in, in which he's only making $5 mm, (2) Manny's a year closer to free agency (injury risk is greatly reduced) and (2) Manny's performance has gone up considerably since then. I thought 11/$231 mm was a fair deal when I started the thread, but more than a year later, it is clearly too low.

Understood, that's why I added the edit.

One thought that I had during the offseason was to offer a TON of deferred money. Like $5/yr from age 41-80. He could have an opt out, but he'd lose that $200M. He'd be the first 1/2B man.

Now, I'm thinking about 13/390. 12, 18, 30, 33-10 years. No opt out, but put a clause that the team can increase his yearly salary to ensure that he is in the top 3 for that year (years 4-13). The clause would give the team the right to not pay him top 3 money, but then he becomes a FA.
