There is a Korean broadcast call of Kim's home run in this espn article. It's pretty fun to listen to:

I think it's about time Kim gets slotted into the lineup every day. He doesn't look like he has trouble picking up left handed pitchers at all.

I'd usually agree but right now Rickard is playing very well in the platoon role too. Kim is better, but I like them both playing if they are both huge positives while being in the lineup, regardless of which it is. Think we should right it out this way for a bit longer. I'm definitely not against making the permanent switch in the not so distant future if Kim continues to beast for a while longer, but I'm sold. He's a special hitter. He may not have great speed, or have huge power, but he's a heck of a hitter. That's exactly what this lineup needs. Walked twice tonight too. Good BA+OBP at the top of the lineup is just going to make this lineup more dangerous.

I'm also loving what Kim is doing (who wouldn't?!?) but still like Rickard in there against lefties. Rickard is one of the very few Speed Guys on the team - when he's on second, it's nice knowing that pretty much any base hit to the outfield will score him. That's kinda rare on this team..!

But, yeah, so far Kim is giving us precisely what has been missing from this team since... Markakis left? Kinda reminds me of Nick at his peak - really tough out, selective, makes the pitcher work... In a small sample size, Kim's abilities seem superior, at least at the plate. Let's not talk about his defense (compared to Nick's)! :)

They can both play if you sit Reimold, who isn't hitting lefties anyway.

Yes - Rickard goes against lefties, Alvarez sits, Trumbo to DH, Kim in LF, Rickard in RF.

Reimold is what he is. He can occasionally run into a fastball and he's really fast, but he's got massive holes in his plat coverage that good pitchers are able to exploit. I really think Kim should have 300+ ABs from here on out.

That last AB (double) was a thing of beauty. 8 pitches...last pitch a slider outside and off the plate...and he just flicks it down the line. He's such a joy to watch. Always has a plan.

It was. And I thought his at bat against the left-hander Thornton in the 9th was equally impressive. He got a pitch outside and flicked it down the line in left, where it was foul by about 6 inches or he would have had another double. Then held on and drew another walk. On base four out of five times, and Upton had to make a hell of a play in the third to keep him from having a perfect night.

Yeah, Reimold really doesn't have a role with this team. Hopefully they can use him as tradebait to get a legitimate LOOGY who can really help solidify this bullpen.

Ichiro Suzuki wasn't known as a power hitter either, but he sure knew how to hit and get on base.

Kim will need to hit for a lot more than 138 PA before I start comparing him to Ichiro, even though their styles are somewhat similar. He's been great but I do think his final numbers won't be as good as they are right now. (Hope I'm wrong!)

Ichiro got on base so much by regularly posting .350+ BABIPs, due to his combination of speed and ability to slap medium hard line drives and ground balls. Kim is currently posting a .390 BABIP, which is ludicrous.

Kim walks more than Ichiro.

He is also putting up a .431 obp which is higher than Ichiro ever put up (best year was .415). Kim's walk rate is about double Ichiro's, and his batting average come from his bat, not his speed game.

Same skin color as Ichiro but other than that they are very different players.

    • JD Martinez would be a more of the same kind of acquisition. He is not an impact bat and he is a periphery (around the margins) piece at this point. Why not set the bar higher and sign Alonso? Acquiring Pete Alonso allows you to move on from Mountcastle and put Mayo (where he belongs right now) DH. It also allows you to move on from O'Hearn.  Alonso gets everyday ABs and Mayo does. Those two things to a large degree help solve the lineup imbalance against LHP. I know Alonso will cost real money. But again who are we paying? The money is there. It's time to start using it (if we want to win in October).
    • Your full quote said to use him as a DH for 100+ games. If you are worried about him being covered through his injuries - how can you assume he wouldn't be injured at the end of the season, going into the playoffs?
    • Here’s an exercise… it’s the postseason and the bases are loaded. The Santa scenario. Who on our current roster would you rather have up over JD Martinez?  Same fact pattern as Santander’s AB.
    • I think the title of this thread told you his status
    • Why did you pare down my quote about it being for the post season and not just 162?  People, always so quick to clown someone. Lmao. Damn. At least use my whole quote bro.  If you think that we don’t need at least one proven playoff bat then that’s ok. My point is, that we have enough 1B/DH options to carry JD through his ups/downs/injuries over 162 for his experience, leadership, and playoff experience.  You can disagree, but quote me right.
    • It's kind of amazing to me how no one knows Suarez's free agent status. I've heard it both ways. He's Schrodinger's baseball player.
    • Since JD Martinez has a career OPS of .950 in the postseason across 12 series and 151 plate appearances, I am sure our FO will have no use for him.  A veteran player who has experienced a lot of postseason success rarely helps young teams get to that next level.
