Possible for Davis, or for anyone?

Rob Deer had a .179/.314/.386 season.   Adam Dunn has a .204/.333/.468 season.   Chris Carter had a .199/.307/.423 season.   So I think it’s theoretically possible to have a line like .189/.318/.432 even over a full year.   Do I think Davis will do that?   No, not really.

Joe Mauer last year:

.282 .351 .379

Honestly, it's shocking that there are such comps. I don't know how he could maintain a .129 BA/OBP spread with such poor contact.

That was Chris Davis’ line this spring.    Would you be happy if he managed that in the regular season?    As a reminder:

2018: .168/.243/.296

2017: .215/.309/.423

2014: .196/.300/.404

I’m hoping he doesn’t get enough at bats to qualify.

Davis spring training was essentially the same as his 2017. I think that's a good realistic goal.

I'd want him released.

There are only two good options for Davis.

He flatlines again and forces the O's to cut bait. Or he mashes for half a season at an .800+ OPS and Elias is able to move him to a surprise contender + a big chunk of salary for a couple of B prospects. Let's call those odds 99:1.

Anything in between just drags this stoopid situation out longer.

The bar is so low its incredible what we accept from a guy making that kind of money.I say if he doesn't hit by June, Id release him.Eat the money.

It’s not a matter of “accepting” it, exactly.   He’s going to produce whatever he’s going to produce, and what we’re paying him won’t change that.    So while I don’t think .189/.318/.432 would be “acceptable” production from a guy making $23 mm/yr, I’d rather have that than what we got from Davis last year, or what we got from him in 2014 or 2017 for that matter.    Whether I’d keep him on the roster for that depends on what my cheap alternatives are.

I would take a .750 OPS and decent defense.

I realize it may prevent the organization from releasing him, but really, I would rather have him perform better. He's vilified around here, but I believe he is a decent human being and I don't wish failure on him. His level of record-setting underperformance has to be impossibly tough to deal with.
