Don't disagree at all, but Chapman's walking 6 per 9 innings the last few years. I don't think he would have been the answer despite the good start for the Rangers.

GrayRod was at 97 pitches; I can't fault Hyde for taking him out.  But with two men already on, better to bring in someone with fewer control issues.  It would have been a good spot for Cano, for example.  Even Joey Kreihbel would have been better than Fuji in that situation.

Hyde's tendency to pull starters early is one of the big reasons why the bullpen has been taxed. He's done it all year.

He’s the 4th most valuable reliever in MLB this season, per fWAR.

He had a rough season last year, but his highest ERA in the decade prior to that was a 3.36. The fastball velocity is back, better than it’s been in years. If he wouldn’t have been the answer, who would have?

WAR for relievers isn’t a good metric. 

I would have preferred someone like David Robertson or Sewald. 
 
Chapman has thrown a whopping 9 innings as a Ranger. Let’s see where he ends up at the end of the year. That walk rate is horrendous and shouldn’t be ignored.

Hyde left Flaherty in today. Everyone is learning. From Hyde’s perspective… when has he ever had starting pitching where they are at 85-100 pitches and still better options than the relief options?

Our SP has arrived.  I know there’s innings limits, but I think we see Hyde trust our starters more. 

Kudos to Hyde. I think we see a more confident SP bunch the rest of the way. What a get Flaherty was.

I thought the decision to let Fuji continue pitching after he walked the 7th and 8th batters was absolutely indefensible.  The guy either has it or he doesn’t, and he didn’t.  I’d much rather have Baumann pitching to Maldonado with 2 on than pitching to Altuve with bases loaded.

He shouldn’t have been in to begin with. He just can’t pitch in a close game.

He did pitch a shutout 123 inning against the Mets in a 2-0 game on Sunday.

Completely agree, although I think the hope was that even bad Fuji (Mr. Nami) could get Maldonado out — and it would then be a confidence building moment for him.

We’re talking about one of 2-3 worst hitting full-time players in MLB. It’s absolutely inexcusable to walk that guy.

Instead of a confidence builder, at least they got confirmation that if Fuji is off, you can’t ever trust him to work out of it. If you can’t do it against Maldonado, you just can’t do it.

I don’t think Baumann was ready yet.  Even when he went and got him to take him out Freddy called to check and you could see Hyde say is he ready as Freddy was on the phone.  Maybe he should have gotten him up earlier but he recorded the first two outs so you don’t expect him not to be able to get one of the bottom three hitters.

What about the three batter rule?

Having Webb and Fuji rather than Baumann and Perez was surprising. Seems like Hyde is testing the whole series like spring training with Mateo getting CF practice and Cano throwing 70% sliders. Really weird stuff these last two games.

How about letting a middle reliever who is dominant go out there to pitch another inning, instead of relying on 4 mediocre relievers to be good on the same night?

Never mind, I forgot Fuji got the two outs. Maybe just needed time to get Baumann warm? It all happened pretty quick after the two outs.
