It actually wouldn’t even be surprising if he made the team out of ST or was on the team by mid May.  It’s what should happen if he’s that good and that advanced, which he appears to be btw.

I think Santander is gone this off season. Or possibly Mountcastle if Santander seems to take to first base. RF being Stowers' spot. Then, I think if Elias deems Cowser ready he looks to move Hays or Mullins in the off season. And I bet McKenna / Phillips holds the OF spot for a month to 6 weeks and brings Cowser up at that point. Not that Cowser can't handle it, but Elias seems to like some warmth in the player before he makes a call for the next level. My thoughts.

Last year Cowser had 45 hits.  10 of those were extra bases.  This year he has 55 hits. 23 for extra bases.  That is a significant development.  June is the Cowser we've been hoping for. 17

Jon Meoli said as much in his Newsletter yesterday, re: Cowser, without quoting the whole thing (as it's paid and all): "Cowser said he was focused on one zone and striking out as a result..."

Some notes from my attendance Tues-Sat last week:

Expanding on what I posted in the wee hours of the morning today, the first game of the series he was getting such lousy pitches that when using their usual "wait for a pitch you can hit," he was just waiting, waiting, waiting for anything near the zone, and got caught with 3rd-strike calls that were borderline two or three times. I was concerned that this was his norm and perhaps the cause of his high K% numbers. 

Later games, though, he looked much more comfortable. When he hit the ball, he hit it hard.

(Admittedly, some of the games I was more focused on conversation and/or getting a good video than I was on his pitch selection. But I don't recall him taking as many pitches in the other games.)

Covered ground well in CF and showed a good arm but also didn't get a lot of opportunities.  

Loved how he was loose, caught him laughing at a foul ball that landed in a cupholder, joked around with the guys in the dugout while in the on-deck circle. Also loved that he was the only one who routinely came over to sign autographs as soon as he was done warming up. (Mind you, wasn't joking around when in the outfield, the two games that I was sitting out there.)

Still 30 points of wRC+ up on (the 1.25 years younger) Gunnar in 70% of the 2022 Baysox plate appearances.

3rd place DET Kerry Carpenter getting called up to The Show this week.    Cowser's AA performance to date looks stronger than Markakis' was the year before that Spring he just wouldn't let them send him down.

Two more hits, two more k's last night.

He's starting to look like a better prospect than Markakis. Similar hit tool, good OBP, better outfielder, more power, but ks more. 

This guy will start a lot of games for Baltimore next year. Two of Mullins, Hays, Santander and Stowers are going to have to end up somewhere else (position or team). Cowser's likely our best future outfielder at this point.

Markakis was in the major leagues at age 22, posting a .799 OPS.  Cowser’s in AA.   So I’m not ready to say Cowser’s the better prospect.  But it could prove out.  I wonder if Cowser moves to AAA soon?

Yeah, Markakis was no chicken liver, played over 10 years, multiple gold gloves and an Allstar appearance.

      If anyone is looking for the smallest of Crochet silver linings, Elias has said things in the past like (paraphrasing), "there's no hard science on innings and we just do our best", and, "it's time to win so we won't be babying Grayson with innings", etc.  So while he usually does try to play it safe with innings when it makes sense to, I think he knows it's all kind of a mystery, and in certain scenarios you just roll the dice.  Still don't think it's very likely based on the type of guys he normally acquires. A guy like Scherzer really seems like his preferred type of dude, assuming he's healthy and the Rangers sell.

      McDermott’s stuff is pretty nasty.  I’m really curious to see how/if it translates to MLB. My observations from last night and in general are: 1. He takes a long time to get going.  Walked the lead off batter on 5 pitches in the first.  Walked the lead off batter on 5 pitches in the 3rd.  Would have walked the lead off batter in the 2nd, but the batter swung at 3 pitches out of the zone.  Walked the second batter of inning 2.  Through 3innings he was at 58% strikes. 2. The swing and miss he gets are almost all on pitches out of the zone.   3. When he gives up hard contact it tends to be in the beginning of games.  3rd out in 1st was smoked right at the RF. 4. As he settles in batters take awful swings against him.  You really see some awkward swings at pitches way out of the zone.  It looks like the batters have no idea what’s coming and where it’s going.  He keeps the batters off balanced and induces a lot of swing and miss on really  bad swings.    5. he changes levels well.  His fastball is a weapon up on the zone when batters are looking for the low curve/slider/change.    The stuff is undeniable.  You can tell no one is comfortable hitting against him.  I guess my question on him is if MLB caliber hitters will be able to lay off the pitches out of the zone.  I feel like if a team game planned him like the Yankees did for Povich’s second start and just not offer at pitches that were even close, he’d be in a world of trouble.  Even with the 71% strikes last night Is still like to better command.  I’d like to see him challenge hitters inside the zone and not depend on chasing so much.

      I couldn't care less what we get in August-Sept as long as he is in good shape to give us 5 innings in Game 2 and beyond in the playoffs.

      Haven’t even read the comments before saying yes. Compared to the embarrassing mess that is the current entire broadcast system, I cannot imagine anything other than regretful tears that Thorne and Miller are gone.  Has anyone equaled the “He’s not gonna throw it at all!” Call? And not just that one. “CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? REIMOLD….and CLEVENGER.” Not fancy wordplay, but an infectious excitement, and a perfect Bass baritone voice with just a hint of gravel in it.  Again, it’s not just the word choice, but the way they are delivered, and the voice that delivers them.
