Trade Deadline Primer/Thread

My wonder is who is next?

Hays wasn't in the lineup tonight and I wonder if the team is fielding calls on him?

Lopez seems like a guy to go but I don't know that he will get traded. (Just a guess)

I feel like after the deadline we will start seeing some of the younger guys playing more regularly. Does the team have a back up option for tomorrow if Lyles is one to go.  As tough as it is to see the team being broke up with the recent run of success I am also excited for the future of this organization.

My gut feeling is that we hold onto Santander and Stowers gets dealt in a pkg with either Lopez or Tate and a fringe prospect for a respectable Starting pitcher that can help the club this year.

A contender is probably going to want Santander over Stowers, someone more likely to produce this year.

I wouldn’t expect Elias to trade off his prospects yet. I think Santander and perhaps a relief pitcher or two is likely the moving parts.

I think there’s a non-zero chance that Elias has a Hays or Santander approach to the deadline, and that Hays gets the better return so he’s the one traded.

I also think there’s a non-zero chance that Elias is purposely planning a LH heavy lineup to maximize results, which also means Hays is traded instead of Santander.

Stowers is a good defender. Maybe not on Hays’ level, but he’s a logical fit to play LF while we wait for Cowser’s early 2023 arrival.

Stowers makes sense as the best prospect you would be ok trading.

I won’t believe Elias is ready to trade prospects yet. His actions point in the other direction. I’m not saying he wouldn’t deal Hays but think it’s way more likely that he send Santander out.

BTW, I read on twitter that the Mariners are looking for a CF. I’m not even sure they have the ponies to trade for Mullins or Hays. Just that there is a need that they might like to fill. I think I’d be asking for Hancock plus a bunch if the Mariners come calling. DeLoach and Dollard. Plus the Mariners GM looks like a guy you could poach.

I still think Santander is the piece to move along with Lopez whom I think will regress.

I don’t think Lopez is a sub 2 ERA guy but he is a sub 3 ERA guy for me.  I don’t think he fetches nearly enough to justify dealing him.

Yea, it’s absurd to think a pen full of journeyman are going to be successful long term.  I like Lopez and think we should keep him if the offer isn’t really good but I’m open to trading everyone outside of Bautista.

Tate needs to go imo.

It was absurd to think they'd be good THIS YEAR but there it is.  I am amazed.

In any given year, middling/mediocre relievers can be terrible or really good.  I’m not surprised they are good but I am surprised they are this good as a collective unit.

    • If a team that loses a qualifying free agent does not receive revenue sharing and did exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, it is awarded a compensatory pick after the fourth round. San Diego Padres Compensation for Josh Hader. The Astros forfeited their second-round pick for signing Hader. San Diego Padres Compensation for Blake Snell. The Giants forfeited their third-round pick for signing Snell. Toronto Blue Jays Compensation for Matt Chapman. The Giants forfeited their second-round pick for signing Chapman.
    • If a team that loses a qualifying free agent does not receive revenue sharing and did not exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, it is awarded a compensatory pick after Competitive Balance Round B.   Los Angeles Angels Compensation for Shohei Ohtani. The Dodgers forfeited their second- and fifth-round picks for signing Ohtani.
    • picks If a team that loses a qualifying free agent is a revenue-sharing recipient and the free agent signs for at least $50 million, the team will be awarded a pick between the first round and Competitive Balance Round A.   Minnesota Twins Compensation for Sonny Gray. The Cardinals forfeited their second-round pick for signing Gray.
    • The answer appears to be, yes, you can receive more than one compensation picks. Angels -- Shohei Ohtani: Pick after Competitive Balance Round B Blue Jays -- Matt Chapman: Pick after Round 4 Cubs -- Cody Bellinger: Pick after Competitive Balance Round B Padres -- Blake Snell: Pick after Round 4 Padres -- Josh Hader: Pick after Round 4
    • the question isn’t about being able to make the offers, it’s about being awarded compensatory picks for more than one.
    • I don’t consider a 4 o’clock game a night game. He also caught Wednesday night and Thursday day this week. Moral of the story is McCann will start 4 games in 7 days because he is Burnes preferred catcher.
    • It is absolutely possible. In 2022, the Mets gave a QO to Bassitt, Nikki, and DeGrom. The Red Sox gave a QO to Boegarts and Eovaldi. The Yankees gave a QO to Judge and Rizzo. The Dodgers gave a QO to Turner and Anderson. I know that it seems to be a foregone conclusion that Santander will not be on the team after this season, and while I generally agree that it is more probable than not that he will not be re-signed, I do think there is a non-zero chance that he will be retained. I think he is the most likely of Mullins, Hays, and himself to be retained, even if it is a small chance. The team has told us how they feel about his bat because he plays essentially everyday, and I have heard Kostka say that they value his clubhouse presence.
