This is probably a fish or cut bait move by the O’s.  Bring him up, play him a lot, and remove him from the 40 man this winter if he doesn’t produce.  I think we’ll see Stowers in a few weeks if Diaz

He was good for 2 and a half weeks in April before getting hurt. Lousy since coming back in late June. Would like to figure out whether he merits a 40-man spot over the winter, so I wouldn't mind seei

Obviously Mancini is universally liked, and yes, I would much preferred Stowers to Diaz, who is highly unlikely to outperform what Mancini was providing (if you ignore that he plays defense occasionally), but it's not like we're trading Eddie Murray. 

Jettisoning Mancini to call up Diaz feels like giving up on the season. Squares with Elias' comments about "playoff odds" when discussing the Mancini trade

Now this I cannot argue with.

But I don't think this is removing Walter Payton from the 82 Bears.

This move makes a ton of sense.  1) He's already on the 40, so don't have to mess with that at all 2) he's on the 40, taking up a valuable spot.  It's now his time to see if he's deserving of keeping that spot.  Competition in the outfield is very high across the board in the organization right now, and it's time for Diaz to put up, or risk being removed from the 40 man.   It's his sink or swim moment, IMO.  And while I certainly don't think it's punting on the season, it's certainly done with the realization that while it's nice we are playing .500 ball, we are JUST playing .500 ball over all.  Maybe if we'd swept Cincy, things would be different.  And maybe not, I dunno.  But in reality even if we kept Trey and everything else our playoff odds were between 2-20 percent or so, depending on what site you look at.  Those aren't the kind of odds that should keep you from making good future plans.

Yeah, zero reason to add Stowers to the 40-man roster until you see how the trade deadline turns out.

I’m glad we have had a surprise season so far.  But let’s not confuse making a weak playoff with being any type of contender. I want a contender!

They aren’t a contender this year with or without Mancini or Diaz.  We can still squeak into a weak last wildcard spot with Diaz (and whoever else we have after the deadline).

      Seeing @SteveA's post about the Twins' ongoing ineptitude against the Yankees got me thinking about the other AL Central teams, who it seems come up small every time they play the MFYs (save for the Tigers in the playoffs). In short: this is the rare case where perception matches reality. Since 2001 (i.e., this century), AL Central teams are 272-492 (.356) against the Yankees in the regular season, "led" by the White Sox at 60-87 (.408)—the only team to crack .400. At the other end, the Twins are 46-106 (.303)—the worst winning percentage in MLB this century by one team against an opponent in its league—and the Royals aren't much better (46-105, .305—the second-worst winning percentage). Minnesota has won the season series against the Yankees only twice this century (2001 and 2023); the Royals are even worse, having won the season series in 2014 and lost 18 of the other 21 (the teams split in 2005, 2008, and 2011). In the playoffs, Tigers teams managed by Jim Leyland are a combined 10-3 against the Yankees and have won all three series they have played (2006 ALDS, 2011 ALDS, 2012 ALCS). All other Central teams are a combined 9-25 and have lost nine of 10 series, with the lone series win coming from Cleveland in the 2007 ALDS (home of the infamous Joba bug game). Minnesota accounts for six of those series losses, with a 2-16 record (the Twins won one game each in the 2003 and 2004 Division Series). With the Yankees hosting the White Sox this weekend, we'll get a near-immediate glimpse of whether current trends will continue...

      For the second time, yes, I understand that. Luck works both ways. The whole point of @Frobbyoriginal post is the angst that seems to pervade the discussion here, even though the record is fine. My comment was that there seems to be a little bit of imposter syndrome around here, a common fear that somehow our weaknesses will be discovered and exploited, and we will end the season three games behind the Promised Land. If we win a 2-1 squeaker tonight, there will be complaints.  If we LOSE 2-1 tonight, there will be complaints. They may even be the same complaints.
