This Season's Last Three Regular Season Games

I would like to see Flaherty get a start. If there were any way to get Irvin up here to take one as well, it would be nice for him. I guess the question would be who goes down to lose for part of the playoffs. Figuring out who to rest and how much and who needs to play to stay sharp. Maybe Adley and Gunnar play one game each. Give Mateo and Urias starts and Westburg too. Let them play against some righties. The OF's could all use a day or so off. Let Frazier and O'hearn give them some time off. Would love to see Kjerstad play the field just once. Get Mountcastle up to speed.

I have tickets to a play on Saturday night, so I’m glad I won’t need to stand up my wife and our friends, or be at the play wishing I could be checking my phone for the score.

I don’t think we need to overdo the rest thing, given that the team won’t play at all between Sunday’s game and next Saturday’s playoff game.  I’d have Adley catch Means just to keep building that relationship.  I’d get Mountcastle plenty of action so long as his shoulder isn’t bothering him. I’d definitely get some looks at Kjerstad in the outfield.  I think every position player and reliever should get into a game sometime this weekend, but nobody needs to start all three games.  And yes, if the team is giving a thought to using Bautista in the postseason, he should get into a game this weekend and show what he’s got.  DFAing Lopez would be the logical move if Felix is activated, so maybe save that for Sunday and get Lopez some action before then.  (I’m also fine if the O’s just scrap any plan to activate Felix in the postseason, and leave Lopez on the roster for now.)

Lol, I missed the game last night due to kid's play. It was excruciating but I was able to limit my phone checks to the intermission. I could have gone home to catch the 9th live but other kid was in the middle of a soccer game...

Actually, last night in the middle of the game, my adult daughter and son-in-law came by to drop off their dog before going to New York.  I was watching the game, of course, but my wife and I wanted to visit with them a bit, so we sat in our TV room chatting with the volume down low on the TV set.  I thought they’d only stay 15 minutes or so, but it became clear they were settling in for a long visit.   So, while I had one eye on the game, I wasn’t fully experiencing the growing excitement of the crowd and the announcers.  So, I left the game on, but set my DVR to record the rest of it and the post-game celebration.  They were still at our house when the game ended, and I let out a little “YES!!!” but that was it.   They left soon after, and by then I was overdue to take my dog out for her nightly walk.  So, I saw just a bit of the on-field celebration live, but said goodbye to them, walked the dog, and then watched the 9th inning and all the celebrations until sbout 10:45.  Not exactly how I wanted to celebrate the clincher, but at least there was a clincher to celebrate.  And I won’t be deleting that from my DVR anytime soon.

Lol, same. When I got back from the soccer game I watched a bit of the celebration interviews, then "rewound" the MLB.tv stream to the 9th inning and watched from there. Still very enjoyable but I hope to watch to playoffs in real time!

This is the first time in a long while that I won't be super concerned with a win or a loss.  I always want to win, but knowing where we are headed, I am not going to be upset if we lose.

I would like to win at least 1 however, so we can finish the season series against the Red Sox over .500.  Would be the first time since, I believe, 2014 where we had a winning record against all the other 4 East teams.

Haha I literally did the exact same thing.  Got home from my son's HS game around 9:30, watched "live" interviews until they went off, then rewound and watched the final pitch up until what I had missed.

DFA Lopez since he's not eligible for the postseason anyway.

You can have him for 2024 if you offer arbitration. I would think it depends on what the Orioles believe his potential to recapture his 2022 form is. If you think he has a decent shot to be a major bullpen piece next year, then why would you DFA him? If you don't think he is worth offering arbitration, then you could do what you want. Unless it opens up a spot for someone who you think might contribute in the post-season, it would seem to be a classless move, even if there is no real downside from a personnel perspective. I don't know what the team believes about his value and potential for 2024.

While I am all in favor of Adley getting as much rest as possible, he only caught one of Means' three starts, and that is his only regular season game catching Means. Just for familiarity, if I were going to catch Adley only once, I would have him catch Means.

If Adley catches tonight, then he catches Sunday too, otherwise you’d have McCann catching a day game after a night game. I’m fine with this, but I’d probably pull Adley after like 5 innings on Sunday.

    • Yeah, I admit I got baited by the thread title a bit and popped off before actually listening to the thing.  It doesn't really change that I've always been concerned about Cal being part of the ownership group, but I was definitely hasty to be like "SEE??". Anyway, I've got my eye on Cal. The guy just rubs me the wrong way. But hopefully nothing much to see here, or in the future.
    • Meanwhile, I have a question about Mayo’s defense.  Everybody implies that it’s dreadful. I guess I can understand that he’s not Manny or Brooks, but how bad is it? Are we hoping he’s at least as good as George Brett, about whom someone once said,(paraphrasing), “his defense is so bad it’s like he carries his bat to the base instead of his glove.“? I love defense, and I see absolutely no reason to move Westburg away. if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It seems far more advisable to plunk Mayo at first and do something with the guys we currently have there?
    • I think the thread title was misleading.  Not necessarily intentionally.  But if you just  see that without reading everything that was said and considering the context, it would be concerning.
    • You know, for $24 a year, a measly lousy 24 bucks a year, you can edit your comment. And you can also support @Tony-OHwho has done more work online to create an Orioles environment than literally anybody else in the entire Internet universe.
    • I think there see plenty of guys who will stay with a contending team they like if the money is close.   But Burnes clearly intends to test the market.   No significant home team discount is coming, and it just takes one team to offer something crazy to knock us out of the picture unless we’re just being stupid.
    • When Mateo is hitting well, he really makes you wonder why he can’t do it all the time.   He looks really balanced at the plate, he uses all fields, etc.  He doesn’t look like a bad hitter who happens to be on a heater.   But that’s what his track record shows he is, until proven otherwise.  I remember that Fangraphs article last year about how Mateo had changed his approach and the improvement seemed real.  Well, no it wasn’t.  But maybe his issues are more psychological than physical?   He’s just a guy who when he slumps, quickly loses confidence and starts pressing and makes it worse?   I don’t know.    As to your point about OBP: in 2024, a .299 OBP is below average but I might not say it blows.  The MLB average is back down to .312 after a spike last year after the rule changes.  Of 312 players with 80+ PA, Mateo’s .299 ranks 191st, or 39th percentile.   Honestly, in this environment, if Mateo could stay at .299 OBP he’d be a very credible player.   But he’s a .272 career OPS guy who’d been at .267 the last two years, so I’m not expecting he’ll be able to stay at .299.   I’ll enjoy it while he’s hot though.   And he is playing a mean 2B.   Took him a couple of weeks to settle in there, but he’s looked great for the last month.
    • I broached the experiment of Holliday in CF some months ago.  It seems to be something that could make sense.  I still expect he'll be our 2B moving forward, but having such versatility is never a bad thing.
