Sabathia to opt out of Yankees contract, become free agent

I think the Yankees will sign him up for a few more years and he will perform very well for the years left on his original deal and then have a decline and end up being overpaid for a few years at the back end. But the Yankees can afford that. He has been tremendous for the Yankees for the three years he has been there and I'm sure they will do what it takes to keep him.

O

The Yankees can give Sabathia more money, just like they did with Alex Rodriguez, and just like they did when they threw $56 Million at Derek Jeter last year, and they won’t miss a beat. They have endless money, and they have not been hamstrung by a bad free agent signing in almost 40 years.

They can overpay for great players, they can overpay for good players, they can overpay for busts, and they can overpay for players that are past their prime. I got used to this a long time ago, and can only hope that they keep falling short of winning the pennant as much as possible, like they have the past 2 seasons, and like they did from 2004-2008. Ideally, they would even fall into a losing streak of 4 consecutive years, like they did from 1989-1992.

Reasonable deal for the Yankees. I wish I could forecast doom on this one, but CC is a hoss and adding one more year doesn't add tto much risk. He may be overpaid here but in the meantime the Yanks will probably get 2-3 more Cy Young-candidate years like the last 3.
