Mets are looking at Reynolds to play outfield?

Love Mark Reynolds. Still hope he can come back. But if not, I hope he has a HUGE year, and shoves the O's face right in it. For the record, I predict Reynolds to hit around .230, but I think his OB and SLG will go up some. I predict an OPS around .830 and 37 HR.

They think that 7 million is too much though.

They just talked for reynolds for a while on MASR tonight, with Wood and DJ kind of scratching their head over the situation. The overall tone was "why the heck is this guy on the market right now"?? Both of them pretty much nailed exactly how I (and others) have felt from the start.

From Mid Atlantic Sports Report tonight.....

Wood...

See the thing about Reynolds, I..I can't get over...this guy has hit 60 home runs the past 2 years for the Orioles. Yeah he struck out as ton, he only batted .221, but in terms of what he produced...a bad first half and then he caught fire in the second half and last couple weeks weren't particularly effective...but it's just...it's the cost of doing business these days in MLB. And a guy who is going to hit you...is going to average 30HR a year...is going to cost you $10 million. It is just as simple as that!

I think Reynolds did a good job at first base, and if they don't want to give him a 3 year deal like the Nats are talking with Laroche, then maybe a 2 year deal with some kind of vesting option for that 3rd year. But I think that Reynolds is another guy, a very positive clubhouse guy who the manager likes, his teammates like him..and regardless what you think about the numbers this year he played a huge role in the second half of the season.

DJ....

See I look at Reynolds..And we have no idea what is going on behind the scenes or what is going to happen in the future...but the past is usually a pretty good indication of what will happen in the future, and that is what these contracts are based on. Now age comes into play but Mark Reynolds is a young guy, he is really just hitting his prime.

I think Mark Reynolds had a bad year last year, and some could say well Dave no kidding! Well a bad year he still hit 23 home runs, so if a guy is gonna hit 23 home runs in a "bad year", what is he gonna do in a good year? What is he gonna do in an average year? Well an average year is going to be around 30 and a good year he might hit you 40. He's done it before!

And you know if, if .220 average .221 whatever it was was a bad year....maybe he hits.....235 or .240. I know you want him to hit better than that, but you know what, if you got a guy that can hit you 30 or 40 home runs, and he has done it before..he is not a prospect this guy has done it at the big league level..and recently...to me I just thought his value-when you start talking about tendering him a contract, or even for that matter picking up his option at 11 or 11.5 or whatever it was....I just think that is the going rate. Look at Napoli, he hit what .227 last year? He just got a 3 year deal for 39 million. 13 million is the going rate (as he shrugs and throws his hands up in air)

That's not what WAR or Fangraph'stells us though

I don't understand the attitude of being an O's fan and hoping that the decisions they make turn out to be incorrect. There seems to be a disconnect there. I would rather my team do well and I be wrong than my team do poorly and I get to gloat about being smarter than them. This is not how I get enjoyment out of my relationship with sports.

Sorry, but this is a pretty stupid and unsophisticated argument in my book. First of all, you don't pay a guy just on how many homers he hits. Ty Wigginton hit 22 homers for us in 2010 (at a salary of $3.5 mm) and we dumped him, and he landed on another team for $3.5 mm. Second, Napoli is not comparable to Reynolds. He catches 60-70 games a year, and catchers who can hit get paid a lot of money. Fangraphs says Napoli has been worth $45 mm the last three years, so a 3/$39 mm contract for the next three isn't that surprising. Reynolds has been worth $13.7 mm in that span.

If someone pays Mark Reynolds $10 mm/yr, then I will eat some crow here, but I doubt that's going to happen. We will know soon enough how the market values him.

I enjoy both actually. Then again I have issues. :D

    • Updated as May 6th.. Big drop for Baumler due to velocity drop and lack of pitches thrown per start. A few new names break into top 30 and with the FCL playing one game, Almeyda and Wager (rehab) pop onto the list now that they've played. Liranzo should show up next week.
    • Irvin will be the one to go to the pen. You also wonder if the Os look to trade a trade a starter, especially if Povich and maybe McDermott show they can come up and help if needs be.  I tend to doubt the Os go this route but I wouldn’t completely dismiss it. They have to figure out some way to get in a real back end reliever to go with Kimbrel, Cano and DC.  They aren’t going to trade Mayo or Basallo and may not move Kjerstad for one either. So, that leaves a lot of other good prospects or taking from the Ml roster.  All of it makes sense on different levels.
    • Yea but for a piece that helps now.  I don’t think I trade him for a prospect package unless it’s some kind of high end pitching prospect that should be ML ready at some point this year or especially next year. That said, I don’t think that pitcher will be available for Santander, so getting something that helps now for him is something we absolutely should be looking to do. I would rather see Hays get back here, show he’s healthy and start performing and then move him though.  Santander has some leadership stuff you like.
    • His statcast numbers are trending well. Only thing that’s surprising so far is that he’s not walking a lot.
    • That new routine includes getting himself warmed up differently and more quickly than as as a starter. These nuances are why no one can assume a starter can just become a great reliever and automatically get a bump in velocity.  We also don't know how quickly he can rebound to be able to pitch again. Now, he hadn't pitched in a week yesterday so he should been fresh, so perhaps the new warmup routine did not see him fully warmed up. Or maybe a lack of adrenaline pitching late in a 6-0 game was why we saw about a MPH difference in his velocities? Suarez didn't miss many bats and actually missed none with his fastball. His fastball has typically gotten a lot of whiff.  The good news is he didn't allow any hits or walks, and needed only 24 pitches to get through 2.1 innings.
