I just read an article that the Orioles want too much for Manny and a deal is unlikey to get done. What is going on?

Well maybe other teams aren't offering enough.   A couple if days ago an article said the offers were better than they were over the winter.   Like I have been saying you will get best offers at deadline.

That may be, but there are two problems with that: (1) if Manny isn't dealt before then, there may be no deal since when the owner (or his sons) blink, or hesitate, or come up with new medical concerns, or ask that the deal be sweetened, or hide out, there will be no time to put the pieces back together, and (2) the Orioles, who are barely able to focus on one thing at a time, won't make any other pre-deadline trades.

On the bright side they would get the comp pick.   I am not going to lose sleep over it.   The team can't get any worse than they are now. What do they have 1 win in last 12 games?

And 4 games against the Yankees coming up.   Perhaps a new summer pastime is in order.

(vs. YANKEES, 7/10)

The Yankees scored 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning, taking a 3-2 lead.

Machado responded by tying the game with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning.

Putting aside Manny trade-mania, I just wanted to step back a second and acknowledge the awesome offensive performance Manny had in the first half: .315/.387/.575, 24 HR, 65 RBI.    It’s really been fun to watch him at the plate this season.

Going into the break, he’s hitting .360/.458/.700 in July.    He’s certainly done what he can to maximize his trade value over the last three weeks.

Manny Machado Passes Mike Trout as Youngest Active Player to Reach 1,000 Career Hits

The title of that article is misleading.    Manny is currently the youngest active player with 1000 hits, but he did not reach 1000 hits at a younger age than Trout did.   Manny was 26 years, 34 days.    Trout reached that milestone on his 26th birthday.   For comparison’s sake, the current active hits leader, Adrian Beltre, got his 1,000th hit at 26 years, 59 days.  Albert Pujols got his at 26 years, 94 days.   Jose Altuve did it at 26 years, 99 days.   Miguel Cabrera easily beats all five at 25 years, 80 days.

Thanks.

It's a little sad that this thread is headed for the MLB section.

Oh, well. If Jack McCoy can get over Pete Rose, I can get over Manny Machado.

    • FIve more shutout innings this afternoon. Thomas Sosa backed him with another HR, but the bullpen couldn't hold it.
    • I think he is most at risk from Mayo. Both RHB power hitters with no real spot other than 1B/DH, and they can't platoon with each other. Mayo could maybe play 3B but Westburg is doing well there. Westburg could shift to 2B, but Mateo is playing well and even if he stops hitting his versatility is needed to cover a variety of other positions. At the end of the day, it seems like Mountcastle is the one blocking Mayo.
    • High praise from Eric Longenhagen, who put him in Others who earned Consideration on his MLB-wide Top 100 mid-May update published today at Fangraphs. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/a-top-100-prospects-update/ Holliday 1, Basallo 9, Mayo 22, Kjerstad 26, Povich 92 the other Orioles placements. Brandon Young, RHP, Baltimore Orioles   Young has had a little velocity bump and has been utterly dominant at Double-A Bowie. His fastball has always had big vertical break, but now it’s more often 93-94 mph, up from 91-92. He has a well-defined four-pitch mix and plus command, though only his changeup is generating a plus rate of swing-and-miss and Young locates that pitch in the zone much more often than is typical of a big league pitcher. He’s a near-ready starter but let’s see him sustain the velo bump all year before considering him a mid-rotation prospect.
    • Gunner, Bradish, Grayson, Adley   honestly … I’d like them to resign Burnes … but I think it’s as likely as me hitting the Powerball when the jackpot reaches a billion dollars
    • I don't see Mountcastle going anywhere and expect he'll be on the team next year. Maybe at some point he ends up not being an everyday player, but I think Santander will be gone next year and depending on trade deadline moves we could see a top prospect or two traded.
    • So he’s probably looking at 8-10 years at $25-35 million per
    • Mounty isn't really catching that much flack in this thread. The main comment is that Ryan is who he is at this point...a streaky, low OBP hitter with some pop. He's amazing to watch when he's on a hot streak, but can have extended slumps where he looks pretty bad at the plate. He and Santander are similar in many ways. But so far the Monty flack has been pretty light.
