It was during WineFest.  I'm not a wine drinker, but for the price of the ticket, I was pounding every sample all day.  (little did I know you're supposed to swish it around and then spit it out.  Go figure.)  Anyway, by the time we got to the brewery there, I was sloshed and going on and on about what a big O's fan I am.  She was very polite, posed for a picture, and then moved on.  Not one of my best moments.

Swish it around and spit it out, pfffft.  You're not a snob.  Puff that chest out and stand tall.

Well, that's what I did.  Drank about 100 wine samples that day in addition to vodkas, limoncello, grappa, beer, more beer, whiskey, more beer.  Ah....good times!

Exactly, I have a similar story. My nephews GF is a chef. She put on a wine tasting with 5 food stations from around the world, 4 bottles per station so 20 "tastings". Me, I'm a Natty Boh kinda guy. So end of the night she passes around a survey asking all to rank the wines at each station from most expensive to least. Everyone else was a wine person. I scored 20 for 20 and won the hand painted wine glass and promptly filled it with Natty Boh. The wine snobs were not amused. lol

The random though I can't get out of my head is what does this team do with Chris Davis?    I think they have to buy him out this off-season.  Hopefully he is man enough to take  some discounted percentage of what he is owed and try to get a fresh start somewhere else.

Would he take 80%?  Would the O's?

Tom Boswell wrapped up his latest chat on WaPo with this give and take:

Q:  Seems like the Orioles made fairly smart moves in dealing Machado, Britton, Brach, O'Day and Schoop. Do you think John and Lou Angelos (and Brady Anderson) are steering the ship now?

A:  Ship? What ship? They are like Ishmael floating on the ocean looking for a piece of sunken whaling ship to pop above the surface so he can cling to it and hope to be rescued. Peter Angelos did more damage to that franchise than Moby Dick did to the Pequod.

Enjoy the summer!

    • Eating a couple months of sub-.600 OPS from Chourio in the majors seems to be paying dividends by October. Grayson's too brittle, Adley's too low, Gunnar's too high, Holliday's too rich - an Orioles version of the Chourio "never in MLB" scenario for Basallo might be part of the before Spring Training flush a night like tonight needs.
    • Dues paying member of the Pollyanna Guild here as well.  That said, the O's underperforming young core could do with listening to a few new voices IMO.  Still undecided about Hyde.
    • I mostly agree with you but I'm not prepared to say no one should be fired.  I think we really don't know enough to say that.
    • Biggest problem over the second half was the approach at the plate, poor at bats, and poor situational awareness. HR or bust offenses do not play well in the post season. You have to be able to be able to generate runs by moving guys over, not swinging for the fences when contact is what is called for and so forth. You can’t just start playing that way when the playoffs start it has to part of your DNA as a team before the playoffs start.    This offseason the first thing the Orioles should do is dump Ryan Fuller the current hitting coach and bring in new proven voice to address some of the issues we all have seen in the approach in general of this team at the plate and its poor situational hitting performances. I’m not saying it all the current hitting coaches fault, just saying that it feels  like something is not working and a lot of that centers around the above. Feels like a change may be good for all.  Last but not least, I want to see Hyde be successful but next is one in which he will need the team to make the playoffs and have some form of post season success.  I think it’s that simple. Injuries won’t save him, only success in the post season will. If he can’t produce that then the new owners and Elias will turn elsewhere IMO. I hope Hyde can pull that off and I for one think he can.
    • But then there is the point Rbiggs252 brings up above where he points out he thinks analytics could be part of the problem in that it discounts old school baseball virtues of singles, walks, bunts and hit and runs.  Even if this is a real issue -- especially as something that distinguishes the O's from other successful teams at a similar budget level -- I think it would start in the front office (though maybe extend to coaching too).  Even if the front office doesn't pursue players with these strengths, the coaching staff could try to adopt and train these qualities as in game tactics in certain situations -- but I'm thinking only with the front office's blessing.
    • Add to that there needs to be a serious examination of how they are coaching hitting prospects in the minors seeing prospect after prospect struggle adjusting to MLB pitching. I think it's more than just bad luck and it needs to be addressed so we're not waiting months or even a year for a prospect to start hitting.
