SS CANDIDATE .....  .291/.352/.431 in 300 ABs at AA in 2019.

I was also surprised to see the Dodgers didn’t protect INF Omar Estévez, who was a real little pest whenever the Arkansas Travelers played the Tulsa Drillers in 2019

5 Errors in 207 innings in 2019 at SS.

Any thoughts about SS Kevin Smith from Toronto?

I see zero reason to pick up anyone like this.

I don’t think they should add anyone but, like I said, a power BP arm could be intriguing.  Can’t really justify any other type of player imo.

Here's a mention of Pop on a Detroit site!

Baltimore Orioles

Mason McCoy – SS – Gamer type with below-average pop and fringe skills across the board.

Brenan Hanifee – RHP – Sinker/slider specialist with average stuff but an ideal frame.

Cody Sedlock – RHP – Former 1st rounder with pedestrian stuff and an injury history

Ofelky Peralta – RHP – Reliever with a plus fastball but below-average secondaries and poor command.

Cameron Bishop – LHP – Stalled starter could find life as a lefty reliever with above-average velo.

Zach Pop – RHP – Reliever with upper-90s sinker and above-average slider, but Tommy John surgery in mid 201

When Elias took Martin the infield depth in the system was barren. No one is ready yet but the depth is much better. So if Elias takes an INF here it would be to help get through the 2021 season. Are any of these players capable of playing solid defense at SS or 3rd and even if they are, is it a worthwhile pick?

Ruiz is what he is but he is not awful at 3rd with the glove, not great but not awful. We know the massive hole at SS.

I'd go with Erick Mejia as he's 26 and held his own at AAA .279/.331/.382.

Another possible option might be Infielder Omar Estevez who has held his own at AA at the age of 21. He hit .291/.352/.784  despite his age diff being -2.8

the 22-year-old is a no-doubt second baseman in the big leagues due to a lack of range and arm strength. On the flip side, he’s shown himself to be a quality hitter over his last two MiLB seasons, batting a combined .283. That’s about as high a batting average as you’ll get for someone in this draft, and it might be all he can do, but it’s the essential part of the skillset.

I don’t think major league quality defenders with solid bats are left for the Rule 5 draft. They would be traded already if blocked.

Obviously I know nothing about these specific players.

This was from Fangraphs in 2018

Erick Mejia, UTIL (from Dodgers)
Mejia had a respectable 2017 at Double-A Tulsa, slashing .289/.357/.413 while learning third base and seeing lots of time at more familiar positions, shortstop and second. The switch-hitting 23-year-old has viable swings from both sides of the plate and projects to have an average hit tool with below-average game power. He’s a flashy albeit somewhat erratic defender and only average in aggregate, though he has the athleticism and range (he’s a plus runner) to be above average if he can continue to refine his defense. He projects as a utility infielder.

The basic question I would think is does Elias believe any of of these players can provide solid defense at SS or 3rd next year?  And if he does is that a better choice than an arm who while flawed has an upside that could be valuable when the team is ready to win.

No doubt long shots either way.
