The second guessing Hyde thread.

I bet Hyde would have let Baumann go two innings if he had been good. Unfortunately, he was not.

You might be right, but I think Irvin was fresh and could have pitched 3 or more innings.  I wanted to save the pen for the Jays series.

We can’t get 3+ outs from Cano every game. I don’t like Voth in short relief. He turned the Pirates game last Friday into a save situation.  Baker and Columbe have been good. They just aren’t Cano/Bautista.

Our offense needs to put teams away instead of giving away ABs when we have runners on base. All of these close games are killing our pen.

We need a couple blowouts (preferably wins) right about now. Have the starter go 5 or 6 then bring in a guy to mop up.

Gibson needs to throw 100+ pitches tonight. I don't care that that it's 2023. He's on a 1 year deal making 10 million dollars. He's 35. Now or never. Empty the tank and save the pen. If not now, then when? Goddamn it he's a starting pitcher. Leave him on the mound. He's being paid for a reason.

Surely he can do 100+ pitches? If not, then his money should go down.

Cole Irvin was called up on Monday May 15th to add length to the pen.   He did not pitch in the Angels series as Hyde decided to go with his established pen arms instead of resting them.   The fatigue of the pen arms looks obvious to me.

Now on May 19th Irvin has not pitched since his last start in Norfolk on May 11th.   I have to wonder whether the layoff allows him to be effective.    With  Givens announced to be traveling to Toronto and to be activated in the next day or two,  Irvin or GRod will start on Sat.   The smart money is on GRod.

That means that Irvin is likely about to return to Norfolk.  I have no problem with Irvin leaving.   But it does not solve the fatigue of the pen.  Givens is a one, maybe 2 inning guy.  Irvin should have been able to give the team 5 innings if needed.  Which would have been the break the pen needs.

I think I'd have went to Cano in the 8th yesterday.  I am fully aware of not wanting to override guys, and you want him fresh for the Toronto series so I think there was plenty of justification to not use him.  But since when is it a hard and fast rule that relievers can't pitch 3 days in a row?  I seem to remember that happening somewhat routinely in the past and now it seems to pretty much be a complete no-go for the Orioles.

Cano is on pace for 90 innings. Most high leverage too. His innings are generally the most stressful innings on the team. Even more so than Bautista.

I’m more concerned with innings than pitches.  Gibson went 7 innings on 88 pitches once this year.  The only time he threw 100+ pitches, he went 4.1 innings.  That didn’t do the bullpen any good.

Like I said - I think it was very defensible to NOT use him yesterday, and I understand the reasons why they didn't.  I still think I'd have done it.  We needed a shut down inning after that Adley homer.

But now he's more available for the TOR series, hopefully we get to a position where we need him.

My bigger question really is with regards to the 3 day in a row thing.  I was listening to the radio and they were acting like it was a given that a pitcher wouldn't pitch 3 days in a row.  I'm just curious as to when/why that was decided.

Guess you have to ask, why pitch Cano in a 4 run game earlier in the week?

Look around MLB and you’ll see it very rarely happens.
