Tidbits from the caravan gossip: beat writers / coaches / players various news comments. Big shout out to my brother and nephew for the help.

1. PA just breathes and blinks and the team will go up for sale when he dies. It’ll be a long, arduous process though.

2. Elias & Rosenbaum have all the input on lineups. Hyde manages the players.

3. Holliday will start at 2nd on opening day and Mayo makes the team bc he’s playing RF too.

4. Grod was very angry at FO by not making team. They had him change grip on slider and told him ST results didn’t matter bc he was going North.

5. They don’t like Kjerstad’s dad at all. Way too involved.

6. Good that Holmes is gone; and Flaherty hated by teammates;

7. they’ll definitely as some point get Cease;

8. they love Mateo for speed & D;

9. Ortiz, Norby, HK more likely to get traded;

10. Means will be a beast this yr;

11. players love new asst pitching coach;

12. will be difficult to extend Gunnar & Holliday bc of Boras;

13. Jordan Westburg is the one they think most highly of (by far) amongst Westburg/Ortiz/Norby and he thinks Westburg is the Opening Day 3B.

14.  DL Hall likely to be in the bullpen long term.

15. Urias most likely just to get cut (maybe traded for peanuts but not sure if anyone wants to trade even that).

16. Hyde is a players coach, potentially to a fault (as in, he thinks the players walk over him as evidenced by the paltry attendance amongst star players at the Caravans this year).

17.  Dean Kremer is most likely to fade out, particularly if Tyler Wells can rebound.

18. Cole Irvin was one of the nicest guys but was fully expecting to be non-tendered and was shocked the Orioles gave him $2M but still might not make the team.

I am kind of confused where all this information came from? You and your family are working / following the caravan and getting to talk with a lot of people?

That being said my post isn’t to scrutinize was just looking for clarity. I love all the information in here if it’s legit. This answers a ton of questions and gives so much insight. I agree with above a new post should be created and if possible a little more background information provided.  Thanks!

The Grayson bit aligns with what I had heard from the beat writers in July 2022 and what his mom posted and then deleted on her Twitter around opening day last year.

I agree, I'd love to know more about where these tidbits are coming from, to whatever extent you can say. Everything is plausible. Many of the items though I'm surprised would have come out at the caravan unless to someone with a personal relationship with management.

Thanks for the report! Maybe the most surprising to me if true is the confidence regarding Holliday/Mayo on Opening Day.

Boras is a cancer to MLB!! I can't stand him, greedy SOB!!!

For an injury prone pitcher!!

I get why everyone (not just here, everyone) is pretty lukewarm on Snell. But was surprised today to see Eno Sarris rank him 14th on his Stuff+ ranking of all mlb starters today

(FWIW he had Grayson at 20, Bradish at 21,  Cease at 30, Luzardo at 33, Kremer at 73, Means at 94, and Wells at 128)

Why can’t we move Urias for …. anything?

I heard we are trying to trade him based on his 2022 season and everyone wants to pay based on 2023 season just like Getz is for Cease.  lol.  Honestly his WAr numbers are pretty good last few years but when I watch him I think Ortiz can do everything he can at half the cost and more upside.  Urias seems like a nice little utility guy for some teams that are not deep for middle infielders and him being pretty cheap.  You would think you could move him for bullpen piece or A ball guy with some upside.

Where is all this coming from? Much of this sounds like a sports talk show of speculation. Also, your posting history was wrong about past free agents. I am skeptical that a decision has been made on prospects starting on Opening Day, long before anything in Spring Training has even happened. I am also skeptical of the viewpoint of certainty that a trade with the White Sox will happen. That is something that takes 2 front offices to agree on and we know the price has been higher than the Orioles front office feels is reasonable/responsible.

That said, most other things certainly seem possible. I definitely buy the idea that Elias makes the Lineups and Brandon Hyde just manages players. I'm surprised Even was mentioned in that and Sig was not.

I totally believe the bit about Flaherty.

I also believe Westburg is the best of the bunch. I'm excited to see him develop.

I like Kjerstad so I hope things smooth over with his parents. I don't want him to be traded.

You are not equating Urias (7.4 rWAR) with Polanco (17,0 rWAR), are you?   I certainly think we could get something for Urias, but nothing close to what the Twins got for Polanco.

    • How about..." we wont win another game in the regular season"?
    • i still like that winning your division matters, at least a little bit.  So I think there's a happy medium between how unbalanced it was, and what you are suggesting.  13 games vs each division team feels right to me, but there are going to be years where that skews the WC thing a bit, because there's always one really bad team, it seems, somewhere (not always as bad as the ChiSox, of course).  I'm not sure how else to further balance it.  Maybe cut back on the NL stuff a bit and play more games against your non-divisional conference rivals so at least there's more head to head to base the WC on.
    • Apparently this post of mine from one year ago killed this thread, as it was the last before today's bump.  In re-reading that, I am reminded (by a past version of myself, LOL) of why I love this sport.  It was actually a bit invigorating reading that back to myself.  LETS GO BIRDS!
    • I've found the older I get, the less interest I have in watching my teams lose. It's a waste of time so I find something else to do. Watching my team lose is not enjoyable so I'd rather do something I'd enjoy. It's not like I'm that old either, just 47. I get a lot more enjoyment out of watching good games with other teams, to be honest. Watching the Bills in the first half last night was fun. The Redskins/Bengals game was fun to watch. Man City and Arsenal on Sunday was great. The Chiefs/Falcons game was a good game. There were a few decent college football games this last weekend as well. I'll watch the game to start tonight and if the O's are down 3-0 after the 1st inning, I'll find something else to do, probably watch some of the other MLB games that have playoff implications.
    • It will be interesting to see if there is any carry over from the HBP's culminating in Heston's beaning.  Hate to say it but that's around when the .500 play started, now much worse.  I did like the way HK stared down Holmes after being hit-I think this series will mean a little more to him.
    • It’s O’s and Yanks. Good guys versus bad guys. Baby Birds up against the Evil Empire — and another trip to the post-season is in the cards. I’ve been cheering for the O’s and very specifically against the Yanks going on six decades, and I’m getting good at it. So, yeah. I’m fired up. Now ask me about hopes and dreams. I don’t think this Orioles team is going to make a run to WS this year.  They have scuffled, they have failed — but I’m reminded, even in the platinum age of data — baseball is still a game of failure.  And man, runners in scoring position over the last week, I’m not sure I want to know that number. They’re still my guys. As long as they’re in it, so am I.
