Santander never even deserved it.  He had some hot and cold streaks, just normal level stuff. Hays and Urias were just off the charts bad at the beginning of the year, the kind of bad that makes you wonder if there’s something seriously wrong with them physically.  Urias (now at 99 OPS+} has basically dug himself completely out of his early season hole.  Hays (70 OPS+) still has a long way to go to do that, but at least he’s showing signs of life.

Also, I think a lot of people haven’t recognized just how much lower the league offensive environment is this year.  Urias had a 98 OPS+ last year with a .703 raw OPS; this year he’s at 99 with a .684.   Santander was at 121 OPS+ last year with a .797; this year, 118 OPS+ with a .751.  The average OPS in MLB was .734 last year and .698 this year.   Runs are down from 4.62 per game per team to 4.32.   So individual performances have to be viewed in that context.

That makes what Gunnar is doing all the more special.  Good info, thanks.  Had heard offense is down, but those numbers really drive the point home.

While I think there’s some truth to that, last year the league had a .726 OPS in March/April, .733 in May.  This year, .699 and .695.

Very fair. A bit of a gut reaction on my part after delving in to the data a bit every time Fangraphs has a post about YOY offense being down. There have been ebbs and flows over time, but early offense is typically lower than where we land full season, pretty uniformally.

I am getting caught up after missing a bunch of games while on vacation.

I assume Saturday's gameball was Bradish for his dominant pitching after having his start pushed back.

I watched most of today's game. Grayson had a perfect game through five innings but his final line wasn't too impressive. That was partially Tate's fault though. I'm thinking it has to be Adley for the big base hit in the 7th to break open the one run game, plus the initial RBI single, and then the grand slam to really put the game out of reach. Even Adley's outs were smashed today (95 liner and 102 grounder). Also nice to see Cedric with some good swings.

6/11 vs ATL. Jorge had the big Weaver Special but Suarez gets the gameball for 5+ shutout innings to steal a tough matchup against the Braves' ace.

Jorge faced the ace.

Suarez faced an ice cold lineup w/ one dangerous bat

This looked like a series where the Braves pitching could overmatch the back end of the O's rotation.  Suarez definitely stepped up.  Deflated Braves offense or not.

6/12/2024 vs Braves, Povich had a real nice start in his home debut but I have to go with Cowser coming off the bench, ambushing a first pitch fastball for a big pinch hit 33% WPA bomb.

Suarez over Mateo last night.

Cowser over Povich tonight.

You lack consistency

That's the beauty of the gameball thread, it is completely subjective, does not need to make sense, and no wrong answer. Povich was excellent for sure.

    • Traded for Bradish, traded for Irvin, traded for Burnes, traded for Flaherty, list can go on.
    • Pablo Sandoval was pretty good for a five or six year stretch. Prince Fielder was a fat slob as was his dad. John Kruk was not  remotely athletic and had a good career. Surprisingly, Andruw Jones was not what I would consider an elite athlete but is probably the best defensive centerfielder of the last 30 years. No, being an elite athlete is not required to be a good baseball player.
    • I wonder what your scouting report of Bobby Witt Jr was in 2022.
    • I think they are trying to tune the robo ump to more closely match the called MLB zone.  The AAA robo ump zone isn't 100% accurate to the rulebook zone, and while the called MLB zone isn't either, it's quite a bit closer.  Specifically balls fading out of the zone are more likely to be adjudged balls by the robo-ump because they're only checking pitch location on a plane at the midpoint of home plate, so for example, a curveball that clips the front of the zone, then drops below it when crossing the midpoint of home plate, would be called a ball by the current robo-ump, but is a strike by the rulebook.
    • Perhaps people shouldn't get personal with you, but you do bring it on yourself. You say outlandish things, presumably to troll, get called on them and then double, triple, quadruple, etc down until people take shots at you.
    • ??? The only sports where people peak younger than 20 is stuff like womens gymnastics and figure skating, where women have to delay puberty in order to maintain a body type ideal for the sport.  Nearly every other sport's athletes  peak between 22-27.
    • Ok several of you want to compare JH to Gunnar.  I am happy to do so: JH is 20 years old and has a .909 OPS at AAA after putting up a .941 OPS as a 19 year old at four levels. As a 20 year old Gunnar had a .826 OPS across three levels, .944 at A, .775 at A+ and .561 at AA (5 games) Even at 21 Gunnar went back to AA for almost half a season and his OPS at AA was .894 I am not saying JH will be as good as Gunnar but people saying we should trade for some pitcher we could have for a year or two have lost touch with common sense.
