Luis Robert

I have seen lots of clickbait stories and posts that suggest the Orioles should put together a package to trade for Luis Robert, but I question his value to the team as currently constituted.  Let's review:

1. The salary cost of Robert is going to be high given the years left on his contract 3.5 remining at a total cost of $62.5M

2. The cost in terms of trade capital will be high as well and I assume it would take one of the Orioles 3 "untouchable" prospects (Mayo, Basallo, Holliday)

3. His value to the 2024 Orioles could be limited.  He certainly has value at least as a platoon CF vs LHP against whom he has hit very well in his career (137/90 VL/VR tOPS split).  However, the team has Mullins, Cowser, Kjerstad, who are all LH OFs plus Santander/O'Hearn as DH/OF.  So, if you want to use him vs RHP, one of them has to sit and all of them are hitting well right now.

4. Robert has done most of his damage in the big leagues without a good BB rate which is an indicator of potential future decline at worst, but at best means his OPS overstates his value because it's less based on OBP.

5. He's having a sub-par 2024 with a .281 OBP despite a 113 OPS+.  His rOBA is only .325 (league .320).

I'd be excited to have another big bat vs LHP only, but I'm unenthused about having him in the lineup vs righties given the other Orioles options and I'm that much less excited by the high price tag.  In terms of future control, Robert will be 27 in August and the Orioles other OF options now in the system include Mayo, Norby, Beavers, Fabian, Kjerstad, Cowser as well Mullins, Hays, Santander, O'Hearn.

I don't see Robert as the missing piece.

I think that clarifies the issue right there.  It's all fiction.

I agree while there’s nothing wrong with adding strength, I’m not sure Roberts a good bet

May be true. He has a ton of talent and would easily be one of the best position players on our team…but availability matters and his availability hasn’t been there.

Agreed, I don't see Roberts being a guy they target for a lot of the same reasons you mentioned. With Cowser showing sings of life with the bat and his CF defense becoming so good this year, Robert doesn't make a lot of sense on this team and certainly not a guy I would send high prospects for.

This could be another Gerardo Parra deal at the deadline. I agree.

I wouldn't waste the capital that it would take to acquire him even if he was healthy. Cedric already plays GG caliber defense in CF AND our offense is tops in the Major Leagues.

What we need is more pitching talent. IMO any prospect capital used in trades should go to acquiring difference making pitchers who can be an asset for series in October.

This. We literally have no lineup holes right now, and Mayo, Norby, Jax lurk. Any trade discussion should center around the four most essential and crucial elements to O's success for the balance of the regular season and playoffs:

1. pitching
2. pitching
3. pitching
4. damn, forgot the 4th one.

oh yeah, its pitching.

Who are you going are going to send down or trade for Robert is he's ideal? Do you bench Mullins? I just don't see outfield as a need.

Haynie on 105.7, has been beating the Luis Robert drum for months on the O’s pre game show. So I think that’s why people like the idea of Robert. Robert also is always hurt.

We need a bat. Probably a RH bat to DH in the playoffs versus a LH SP. That bat is Mayo. It’s just hard to get Mayo up before September when we get the extra roster spot.

I get that McCann’s bat is not ideal in the lineup (on the days that he plays). And Mullins struggled really bad for about 6-7 weeks. And Mateo/Urias are no great shakes themselves. But even with all/each of them getting regular to semi-regular ABs, we have the #1 offense in the sport. Like it literally doesn’t get any better.

So how do we “need” another bat. Maybe if Mayo is still here, he comes up at some point and strengthens us even more? But I struggle to understand the idea of us needing more offense, especially when the pitching is this shaky. Do you want Cano (who know looks like he’s lost it) and Perez coming in to try to hold games in the 7th/8th inning only to turn it over to Kimbrel in the 9th in October?

Maybe we defeat SEA/NY and reach a World Series for the first time in over 40 years. How would you like our chances of potentially Ranger Suarez vs Irvin/Kremer/Suarez/Povich for 2 times in a potential 7 game series? Seems like the Phills would have a strong advantage there, no?

I think the concern is that Suarez (and Sanchez) have the advantage due to our LH heavy lineup. Of course pitching is the biggest need, but if you can add a good RH bat to the lineup, you should (not saying it’s Robert, ftr). I don’t think it’s a zero sum game.

You mentioned 4 possible pitchers twice in a 7 game series against Ranger, Wheres Burnes ang Grod. As far as Perez he just needs to get better, Cano? I get that he gave up 4 runs in his last 3, and looked SH last night, but before that he went 11 appearances where he gave up 1 run, that will work. It runs hot and cold for everybody. If you take every bodys worst well miss the playoffs. Mayo? might as well try to make the lineup better, because I think a lot of posters are going to disappointed by pictching upgrades at the deadline

CF is not a "need" but Mullins has shown he is not a consistent bat. I could see value in having both Mullins and Robert providing insurance for each other, especially in a no Santander scenario. I'm interested if the cost is mostly Robert's contract.

    • Westburg in LF would at least make room for a Gunnar-Holliday-Mayo infield. If he could turn into a CF that would be a bonus.
    • This is against a LHP so I’ll cut him some slack but I believe he’s also in this position against RHP.   Look where his but is and look how far he has to reach, off balance, just to get the end of his bat to reach the outside corner. The problem, as I see it, and @OnlyOneOriole has touched on, is he does the leg lift and his first move is to open that hip instead of staying closed towards the pitcher.  The hip and butt are out.  He can still do damage on inner half stuff but he loses all his leverage when he has to reach for stuff on the outer half and he’s almost totally vulnerable to outside corner.
    • Anyone remember Ken Levine?   He was Kevin Brown before Kevin Brown was born, with the pop culture references and that type of sense of humor. He was a longtime TV writer who had written episodes of M*A*S*H among other things but he dreamed of being a MLB radio PBP guy, and the Orioles gave him that chance for a year or so... maybe around 1990????    I don't recall him being a bad announcer, but nothing is really memorable about him after all this time except for him always trying to be funny.
    • What about year round workouts? Trying to maximize velocity? I agree the per game standards have been harsher but years ago in the winter baseball kids were playing basketball, resting etc. Now they have indoor workouts tweaking mechanics.
    • Jon Miller and Joe Angel belong in the O's Hall Of Fame.  I guess Gary Thorne deserves to be in, I'm sorry I didn't care for him!  He got excited if either team had a key hit or play, and he was big on statistics.  He may be better than what we have today!
    • The Brewers' starter last night was lefty Rob Zastryzny.   I guess an opener, he went one inning.   He was in camp one year with the O's but didn't ever pitch for us, major or minors.   He's 32 years old and his inning last night means he has pitched in the majors 7 out of the last 9 years... for a grand total of 60.1 MLB innings.
    • When you’re thinking of building a statistical model to project success of a major league player, one thing you want to avoid is uncertainty. You need your variables to be predictable and applicable across a swath of data. When you look at pitching, the top arms today, don’t think of the outliers like Paul Skenes, instead look at what round they were drafted related to their current talent level. You will see a great number drafted not in the first three rounds.    Frankly, there are too many uncontrollable variables on the the road to pitcher success at the major league level. Theres injuries, there’s incorrect coaching, there’s incorrect application on the player to adequate coaching, etc.  A smarter team, which we thankfully are, realizes that not striking out on any of your draft picks is much more of a positive than drafting for a need, specifically pitching. Just look at Carter Baumler for example. He was drafted ahead of Mayo, has already incurred injury and no realistic timetable to be a viable major league pitcher. In short, it’s best to have the trade pieces of viable players to go out and pitchers that need a small change in stance, or coaching or environment to be truly great. We’ve seen that time and time again with Coulombe, Cano, Perez, the mountain, etc. Let the other teams take the gamble and strike out/give up on players, then sweep them up and strike gold.
