But you brought O'Hearn into the discussion, right? Okay, back to my little fantasy.

In the sense of, KC had a thought that a player wouldn’t work for them in the past, so they aren’t infallible in those choices.  And we have a recent example of that on our team.

Relievers recently acquired by the Orioles (with major league experience):

  • Colin Selby
  • Burch Smith
  • Nick Avila
  • Levi Stoudt
  • Thyago Vieira
  • Corbin Martin
  • Yohan Ramirez
  • Andrew Suarez
  • Jonathan Heasley
  • Craig Kimbrel
  • Tucker Davidson

I may be missing somebody. Obviously, Craig Kimbrel was the signing that had every intention of immediately helping the major league club. But to date, none of the other guys have actually been effective at the major league level for the O's or have made it back to the big leagues for them. The jury is still out for Burch Smith, we'll see.

I hope Colin Selby can help the O's. His stuff sure is interesting. But these signings generally are there for depth, tinkering, etc. All that said, it's been awhile since the O's have hit on one of these relievers a la Coulombe, Perez, Cano, Webb, Krehbiel...even Baker. They were so good on at least turning one of a half dozen or so into reasonably effective/useful arms for the big club.

We'll see.

Look man, I know you don't like to be wrong but it's okay. It just proves you are human. You don't have to personally attack me because you got caught in a lie just now.

I'm still not convinced he's human.

I wonder if the O's are going to see how effective Selby can be by changing how he leverages his fastball. With his diminished velocity (97 last year, 94 this year), he probably can't afford to live like this:

Chances are they'll have him live more with the sinker/slider/curveball combo. If that's the case, he could be a Cano type with the grounders and keep the 4 seamer as a change of pace pitch out of the zone. Now, he's only thrown his 4 seamer 22 times this year, but he's lived too middle/middle with it.

He does seem to fit the profile of the kinds of pitchers that the O's like in relievers: strikeout stuff with heavy sinker usage.

I'm intrigued.

In 22 four-seam pitches this year.  It's normal to have some variation.  And don't recall where the stabilization point is for pitches.  It's probably pretty low.  It at least provides some hope for a bit more juice...

Don't anyone get your hopes up; he was optioned to Norfolk. The Tides are where decent players go to rot in Purgatory forever, while such luminaries as Cole Irvin and Colton Cowser stay permanently cemented in the bigs. Pay no attention to our minor league rosters; you won't see anyone from there playing for the Orioles this year until roster expansion in September, and even then, it'll be the bare minimum and we won't be sending down anyone who deserves sending down, or DFAing anyone who deserves to be DFAed.

I'd just like to state that I think I was the first to wonder if they'd be shopping the "Cash Considerations Aisle."  I hope this is a good pick up.  I'm hopeful.

Why, I remember it as if it were only yesterday....

    • Just to add a little more statistical backing to what we’ve all been seeing (and suffering through) with our own two eyes, the batted ball quality has also been awful. He’s posted an average EV of 85.6 MPH since 6/30, which would rank 140 out of 145 qualifiers over the course of the full season. He also has a 27.1 HH% during that span, which would also be 140 out of 145. He’s had 3 barrels all month, and the launch angle is a very un-Adley-like 20+ degrees.  On the positive side, as the OP indicated, there’s probably some significant bad luck there. Statcast has him at a .219 xBA — which still isn’t very good, of course, but it’s much better than the .119 mark he’s actually posted. The BB (13%) and K (11%) rates look much more like what we’ve come to expect from Adley, as compared to where he was earlier in the season.  And in terms of the very small recent sample, he does look like he might be coming out of it. Over the last 3 game, the EV is way up (93.9) and he’s consistently hitting the ball hard (60%). He’s only 1 for 12, but the xBA on those batted balls is a whopping .346.
    • And it seemed to come out of nowhere.  OPS by month .827 in April, .798 in May, .848 in June and .482 in July.  Just crazy how bad he has been for over a month now.  For a catcher with the heat this time of year you would assume overwork and exhaustion but I feel like the team has done a decent job of resting him by using the DH slot.  Maybe they need to consider more full off days for August and September.  With Mayo coming and Eloy here maybe they gets all the DH at bats versus LHP and Adley can rest fully.
    • I honestly can't think of a reason, but whatever. I don't think it really hurts anything.
    • It's really strange, I agree. He didn't look comfortable last night at all. His command and stuff have been slowly deteriorating all year IMO. I kind of wonder if he's got a little bit of an injury, saw him kind of stretch his back/shoulders at one point, but it might be something he always does, not sure.
    • Sure, but that's the job. It is the "Hot Corner" for a reason. Brooks, Mike Schmidt, George Brett and whoever else that was or is good over there would have knocked it down.
    • All that time and he ends up signing for the $150K bonus his draft position is assigned. Guess we know who won that negotiation. Either way, now the young man can try and improve his stuff in a professional environment. I suppose the team sees a way to get more velocity out of him despite by a smallish left-hander, but hey, that's what development is about.
    • Can anybody explain why Suarez consistently throws less hard as a RP? His average fastball on the season is 95 MPH, but last night was 93.5 MPH. It’s exactly what happened when Suarez was a RP earlier this year. SPs typically pick up a tick or two when going to the pen, not the other way. Suarez throwing 96-97 as a RP, or even just maintaining his 95 as a SP when in the pen, is interesting. Suarez with a 93 MPH fastball isn’t a MLB pitcher.  It’s bizarre, I don’t know if they need to figure out a better warmup routine or something? His brother seems to have figured it out just fine - ask him for tips?
