Bill James' 2013 Projections

I'll format this so it's easy to see what he's saying about each guy.

Notes:

- Slash Line is OBP/SLG/OPS

- Reimold's projection is right in line with his total career numbers

- I only included McLouth's Orioles numbers

- BRob not included. Bill James always predicts him to have a big comeback year. It's a flaw in his system, imo

I find these projections very reasonable. I like what it does with Machado, Flaherty, McLouth, and Reimold. Tough guys to predict. He has AJ regressing, which I strongly disagree with, because nothing he did last season was unsustainable.

He's pessimistic about Hammel, JJ, Strop, and Ayala. With good reason I think.

I disagree with his projections on Hunter and Matusz. I think those two will excel in the pen, and I'm more optimistic about Tillman than he is.

I'm surprised to see how optimistic he is on Gonzo. He loves O'Day, and he thinks Britton will improve.

My conclusions: We would be wise to sell high on Hammel, and perhaps Strop and JJ as well.

Seem pretty darn optimistic to me, especially with Davis.

Fwiw, James was dead on about Chris Davis in his projections last year. His projection system had him as 316/.500 in a part time role, but he also went on the record as saying that Chris Davis could be a 30 HR hitter if given a full-time role. Those were both very bold predictions at the time.

I'm sure we'll see people coming out of the woodwork as saying "I knew it all along", but Davis was a huge question mark coming into this year, and Bill James was very accurate with him.

He's certainly very bullish on Chris Davis. I wonder what the reasoning is or the statistical reason.

I can't see any statistical evidence to back it up, just the "light switch" theory.

Not saying it couldn't happen, but I would bet that an .872 OPS is very unlikely.

Wouldn't be complaining if it happened though, that is for sure.

Good info, I will give you that.

I just need way more of a track record to predict he turns into an offensive force like that, almost overnight.

    • It’s a tough call. The O’s need more help in the bullpen, both short term and long term, than they do in the outfield. But I think the state of affairs are well enough that you can really pick and choose your keepers. Kjerstad is a “nugget” (are we still using that term?) and the back of the bullpen, while a weak spot on an otherwise great team, isn’t really that bad off or anything. So you offer out the guys that obviously don’t have a place here, presently Norby, Stowers, and Beavers, and take what you can get for them…assuming you’re not giving them away of course. No reason to put Kjerstad in that mix if you dont have to…and they don’t have to.
    • This is of course a pretty well reasoned post...but it comes undone a bit at the end.  Valuing players and trading value for value is what every good GM strives to do. And saying we have Beavers so we can trade Kjerstad is of course correct, but you absolutely don't want to devalue what you get in return for talent because you have more. On the margins, sure.  But if you value your work, and it is clear that Elias does, and you believe these guys still have value, you don't just give em away because you have plenty.  I know that is not what you are really saying.  But the counter is also true.  I don't think keeping people to have 1-9 homegrown is a thing.  And I would rather trade Kjerstad for a bat that might push us over the edge than trade him for two middling relievers.  He is more valuable than that today even taking into account the wide range of outcomes he could have. I believe we will make trades before the deadline.  I don't think Elias cares where the starting 9 comes from but I think he will look for true upgrades.
    • Cool!  That's much better than winning a playoff game!
    • fwiw, in the clips before his HR derby swings, he's got the leg kick in the highlights.  Dunno if it's "the same" leg kick we're seeing today, but it's pronounced.. possible he was "cheating" his swing in the derby, but i dunno. 🤔
    • Shohei changed from a leg kick to a toe tap during his first US spring training, because he was late on everything when he got here.

    • Fangraphs still hesitant to move the O's into their top "The Best of the Best" tier. That title belongs only to the Dodgers and Braves for now, with the O's one notch lower in "On The Cusp of Greatness" along with the Phillies and Yankees.  Looking back, this is the Dodger's first week returning to top billing after two weeks where their Tier 1 was simply "The Braves." The Yankees had a couple appearances in the top tier during their early hot streak. But I'm thinking the O's will spend much of the summer with ATL and LAD in "The Best of the Best." At Fangraphs, and in popular opinion as baseball's current big three.  https://blogs.fangraphs.com/fangraphs-power-rankings-april-29-may-5/
