Team hitting in August:

HR 57, #1 in MLB

R 175, #3 in MLB

OBP .347, #6 in MLB

SLG .534, #1 in MLB

OPS .882, #1 in MLB

The Twins outscored us by two runs, but also played one more game, so we topped them in R/G.   The Cubs led MLB with 191 runs (6.59 per game).    I had no idea they'd been on such an offensive tear.

As much as I was looking forward to doing last month's report, I've been dreading doing this one.

Conclusion:   How does a team go from scoring 6.03 runs/game in August to 2.96 in September/October?   How do they go from 1.97 homers/game to 0.96?   How do they go from .945 OPS with RISP to .556?    The lack of offense in September certainly doomed this team in September/October, but it's not like any other aspect of the team was good.   The starters were last in ERA (6.30) and pitched a ridiculous 4.69 innings/game.    The bullpen, operating under duress all season, showed the strain with a 4.61 ERA in the final month.   And the outfield defense continued to be subpar, though the infield had a decent month.   It all adds up to a 7-21 record, and you almost wonder how they won that many.     I'm very glad to turn the page on September/October 2017.

I stopped adding to this thread during the miserable 2018 season, but now I feel up to reviving it for 2021.  I find it interesting to see how the team’s performance and the elements of it fluctuate over the long season.

April 2021

12-14 record

6-7 vs. AL East

4-10 at home

8-4 on the road

4-3 in one-run games

2-3 in extra innings

Batting

3.62 runs/game was 14th in the AL

.224 BA was 11th

.282 OBP was 14th

.366 SLG was 14th

.648 OPS was 14th

0.96 HR/G was 13th

.211/.291/.303 with RISP (.594 OPS was worst in the AL) (215 PA, 185 AB, 39 H, 56 TB, 63 TOB)

Pitching

4.01 ERA was 8th in the AL

4.12 RA/G was 8th

1.31 HR/G was 11th

5.00 starter ERA was 14th

4.85 IP/start was 11th

2.81 bullpen ERA was 5th

7 saves was tied for 5th

12 save opportunities was tied for 2nd

5 blown saves was tied for 3rd most

Defense

5 unearned runs was tied for 2nd fewest in the AL

0.46 errors/game (12 errors) was 4th fewest

0.9 fangraphs defense was 7th in AL

2.9 UZR was 4th  (+4.2 OF, -1.3 IF)

+3 Rtot

*2 Rdrs

-1 OAA

Conclusion

The hitting was very poor all month, in pretty much all respects    With the obvious exception of John Means, the starting pitching also was very poor    Relief pitching was the bright spot, and the defense was better than I’d realized, both by standard metrics and advanced metrics.    Overall, 12-14 is a decent start for this team, but the offense and starting pitching will need to improve if the team wants to continue exceeding expectations

It only makes sense to bump this thread instead of starting a new one every month.   The whole point is to compare how the team does month by month in various respects.

I don't know man, I think we should have ten times the number of threads we currently do, but talking about the same things.  That way finding any old posts is almost impossible.

I think I'm going to start a thread tracking how former Oriole players are doing in May of 2021.

It’s a 4 year old thread(in terms of when it was last updated).  I don’t think people are pining for comps this old.

More than that, I’m just impressed that only do you remember starting the thread but that you actually take the time to do a search to find it.

Two games under .500 with our schedule really isn't too bad. The only "bad" team we have faced really is the Yankees who a lot of people picked to win the division this year (FiveThirtyEight still has them as the #2 team in MLB). ESPN's RPI has us right about average at 17.

The Yankees are back up to .500 at the moment.  On our schedule so far we have only played 5 games now (out of 28) against a team with a losing record.    3 @ Texas and 2 @ Miami.    We were 3-2 in those.  Our next 4 series are also all against teams at .500 or better.   Next opponent we have that has a losing record (as of today) is Tampa in the middle of May.

The Yankees are 9-4 in their last 13 games, and Gerrit Cole and Corey Kluber's combined pitching lines from their most recent starts are ...... 14 Innings Pitched, 0 Runs, 1 Walk, and 22 Strikeouts.
