He has the potential to make us better, like Chen did. Will it happen? Beats me.

You could say the same thing about Jo Jo Reyes as well as any pitcher on the scrap heap. By the way, you keep referring to Bruce Chen -- I believe to somehow suggest something about Eveland but Chen was acquired by the Royals for nothing. Doesn't that suggest we don't need to give up prospects for these type of lottery tickets?

Eveland has to make the 25 man roster because:

1) He has no options left.

2) He is arbitration eligible and will make around $1M next year.

He probably ranks about 7th among the O's starters. Guthrie, Britton, Arrieta, Hunter, Matusz, Johnson, Eveland and Tillman. Simon, Bergesen and Reyes probably do not make the 25 man roster.

Therefore Eveland probably ends up in long relief. He is starter depth that is put into the rotation when injuries hit. That makes Eveland worth something, but this value is low.

We shouldnt have give up stuff for Eveland, and very little for Teagarden. Flaherty cost $50K ...Actually $25K after he gets offered back. I just hate to see that we are losers so far under DD as far as value received/given.

Well lets put it this way, would you rather have Simon or Bergesen pitching in long relief and keep Martin and $1 million or D. Eveland. Seriously, is anyone choosing Eveland?

Simon will be in the pen if he doesnt make the rotation. No reason he shouldnt as he's probably the second or third best bullpen arm we currently have. He shouldnt have been in the rotation at all but the Orioles were desperate.

And if you want Eveland, wait for him to be non tendered or sign his clone and trade nothing for him.

This works for a normal team, however there is a high probability that it does not for the O's. The O's are last place the free agent pitchers would sign. If there have any other option, they will take the other other. A last placed AL East team is the worst team to try to rebuild your pitching career. Especially how the ball flies in the summer.

Unfortunately, there is a reason that Simon probably does not make the team. Yes he has a strong arm and good velocity. However his command is poor. At 30 he probably is what he is. His ability has probably peaked by now. As a reliever his had a 4.93 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP in 2010 and a 4.64 ERA with a 1.50 WHIP in 2011. He is one of the reasons the O's have the worst ERA in the league and he is a pitcher that the O's need to replace this off season.
