split the difference and call it 10 weeks (no baseball activity), add three week rehab assignment and I have him returning to the lineup on 6/12

A couple of months of struggling with flare ups and not performing up to Nick's standards, surgical consults and then season ending surgery, mid September.

Surgical recovery for herniated disc is minimum 9 months... so returning to lineup just before all star break 2014.

Very disappointing.

I don't see Roberts or Reimold lasting past mid May.

O's will be starting 2-3 AAAA players.

Going to really struggle to score runs this year.

Reynolds will OPS 860 for Cleveland

Moral of the story is that he has a SMALL herniation. It could potentially bother him the rest of his career or he could be back to normal Nick on OD. Not even the doctors know for sure. I think what happened to Reimold last year is clouding too many judgements on Nick's injury.

Or ....... some people just have cloudy judgement in the first place, and will find something to declare their Oriole-doom vision about, regardless of Reimold or Markakis' status. I would bet a nickel that if Markakis weren't hurt, he would make another "world is ending" post about somebody or something else that is Orioles-related.

I have chronic neck/back pain, and I'm in pain pretty much every hour of every day (yet my doctor refuses to have an x-ray done) ... pain and numbness radiate from my neck down to my arms, shoulders, and legs, and that's just doing basic activities like standing, sleeping, and walking. I can't imagine having to play baseball at a high level with that kind of pain.

So, you're saying that you won't be available for opening day ???

"He basically told me what was going on and what to expect and that was pretty much it," Markakis said. "It's a slight bulge in my disc between the C4 and C5. Two- to three-week recovery from time of injury. It's already been over a week, so another week or two. Basically, once the medication pack is done, it goes on how I feel."

The Orioles open their season against the Tampa Bay Rays on April 2 at Tropicana Field, and Markakis can't promise that he'll be in the lineup. All he can offer at the present is optimism.

"I'm confident that I'm going to be OK," he said. "Whether I'm there opening day or not, that's on how my body reacts and how I feel. If, say, I were to miss opening day, I don't plan on missing too much time. Maybe a week if necessary. But everything I've heard and talking to the doctors, I should be fine, I should be ready to go for opening day. It's just a matter of getting back in the swing of things, start hitting again, throwing and getting in some games."

Why? He flew all the way back to Baltimore to see a spine specialist from Johns Hopkins. Plus he was examined in Sarasota, I believe. That's enough.

I don't think they are talking about Nick here, but instead about a member who has chronic pain.
