Nationals Ask Court to Modify Injunction in MASN Dispute

MASN responded to the Nationals’ request later that same day. The network offered to increase the size of the bond it had secured to ensure that the Nationals would receive the additional broadcast revenues should the court eventually rule in Washington’s favor. But MASN argued that it should continue to be allowed to pay a reduced sum to the Nationals pending a final resolution of the lawsuit. The network also contested the claim that Washington was unable to fully invest in its team’s roster due to the injunction, citing the Nationals’ recent $210 million contract with Max Scherzer as proof that the lawsuit was not hampering the team financially.

I found this interesting.

I found this interesting.

Quite interesting that the team with the 9th highest opening day payroll in 2014 is whining about not having money to field a competitive team. Especially when that team has gone on to invest $210 million in one player. And while the Rangers were on their heels at 10th... it was about $20 million in payroll between the Rangers at #10 and the Reds at 11. For gosh sake, the Nats invested almost $30 mil more than the Os in payroll.

They agreed to the contract as is. They don't get to change the contract because they don't like the conditions and they're entrenched. Well... I should say that they SHOULDN'T be able to.

What does that have to do with anything?

The fact that MLB and the Nationals have attempted to change the business model of the auxiliary profit source that we were given to compensate for loss of half of our marketplace. And we do not know what our financial state might be. As well as operating at the highest payroll level and just finally coming off the MLB's debt percentage watch list, I'd say it matters quite a bit. Having partnered with MLB on this, I am sure the Nationals have received assurances that their income will be guaranteed.

Meanwhile what was our biggest free agent signing this offseason?

Where have you been for the past several off-seasons?

DD isn't going to make headlines and front page news by signing an overpriced veteran to too much money.

It isn't how he operates.

You can either accept it or keep complaining about it.

I was referring to the apparent disdain for our lack of a splashy move.

Under the cloud that this overreach has created, I am surprised that we do have our largest payroll ever. There were no free splashes to be made. What does he think we will do, spend half that much again when the future of the franchise's profitability is in jeopardy?

Also the other franchise is a new franchise. I am sure they would like to have their first world series. I imagine the business model projects to be extremely profitable for them no matter what the outcome of the attempt to set aside the terms of their existence are.

I feel you are buying in too much to the Angelos party line. Forbes has shown the Orioles to be profitable every year excluding the profits from MASN. And no matter which way the MASN case turns out, the Orioles are earning large income from MASN. They'll make less if the Nats earn more in rights fees, but remember that the O's get the same rights fees as the Nats.

That and the extreme dislike for the team in DC has shaped his feelings on MASN and this dispute.

But that money is subject to revenue sharing so effectively the O's get hit twice.

    • Wet Leg has won three Grammys! Pixies considered mainstream now? I'm an Iron Maiden fan from way back. Singer/Songwriter folk artists like Bob Dylan, Suzanne Vega and Tracy Chapman. It's just finding stuff on the periphery is more rewarding.
    • Poke via Uber is a bold move. Cheers, sir.
    • What mainstream music do you like? Or is a never ending attempt at being a hipster? Like, you can admit you like some Led Zeppelin or Motley Crue’s first two.
    • Farewell to Ryan McKenna, claimed on waivers by the Giants after being DFA'd the other day. We all have followed his career since his great 2018 season at Frederick. Ryan Mountcastle,  Cedric Mullins, and Nick Vespi are now the three remaining members of the Orioles 2015 draft class still in the organization.
    • I can see Adley aging on the Posey curve. He probably has until age 35 before he will hang up the spikes/be a negative valued baseball player. IMO Adley's defense is average, he has a below average throwing arm. But his bat is excellent. And there is no arguing that his presence has made a tremendous impact since the very first day that he stepped onto a Major League field for the O's. Gunnar may not extend because of Boras and the same may turn out to be the case for Holliday. But that should not preclude us from locking up the other guys who prove to be special. Right now Adley is that IMO and Westburg appears to be working his way toward that. But even if we do not extend our own guys, we should bring in others who will sign and impact winning in a positive manner.  Again IMO, not spending and cutting cost is not the way to go for franchise viability/growth. Customers/fans are more informed than ever and have more entertainment options than ever. Your message to them cannot be come out to see the Orioles just because we are the Orioles or "Hey we will probably win more than we lose (like the Rays) but won't make any real efforts to seize opportunities (by spending) when they are there." San Diego doesn't have a problem with fan engagement/attendance even though they don't/haven't won big because they have captured the attention of that market and become relevant by signing star players. And showing their fanbase that they are invested. I am not saying that I want to be like the Padres, but I certainly want the O's to be/remain relevant in this market (like they are now). Every time I take my kids to games, they are excited to go (in particular my youngest). That is how you capture the next generation of O's fans - by being relevant. 3 years ago I couldn't get my kids to go to an Orioles game no matter what! Conversely, I have never had that issue with the Ravens. They've always wanted to attend their games (even practices/training camp).
    • I see Toronto has lost the first two to Tampa for a 3-game losing streak after John Schneider's emotional proclamation of a "big win for May 14th" Monday night. They were up 4-0 with Gausman heading into the 6th today, but....nope.
