On May 4th, Clay Buchholz had an ERA of 6.03, and a WHIP of 1.596.

In the 11 games since then, Buchholz has pitched 78.67 innings for an ERA of 2.17, and a WHIP of 1.030.

For the season overall, Bucholz has an ERA of 3.27, and a WHIP of 1.191 ...... pretty amazing, considering how badly he started the season in his first 6 starts.

He has a personal catcher now.

The Sox scare me. As much as they seem poorly constructed and a bit dysfunctional, a revitalized Buchholz and the shot in the arm from Eduardo Rodriguez could spearhead a comeback. They're still light in the starting rotation but they have a nice 1-2 punch.

Yep. Completely agree. They are still very much in it.

The Red Sox looked like they might sneak back into the race last a few weeks ago, but they have once again fallen on hard times, falling into a double-digit deficit behind the division-leading Yankees.

What changed?

They are really bad. I've never looked at Cherington's background before today, but it looks like he has a very heavy scouting background and less of an analytical/management background. I'm not so sure that's the greatest mix these days for a GM.

Henry C. Owens will make his career major league debut tonight against the 1st-place Yankees in the Bronx.

That is about as challenging and eventful as an MLB career debut can be for a Red Sox pitcher.

I hope that the kid gets it done.

After a very shaky 1st inning in which he threw 34 pitches and gave up a run, Owens settled down and retired 14 of the next 15 batters that he faced.

He then gave up a single and a double to start the 6th , and was yanked ....... and both of said runners scored.

Aside from the fact that I am annoyed about the Yankees re-taking the lead, John Farrell had a kid making his major league debut who was in danger of being blown out in the 1st inning. He not only settled down, but actually dominated the Yankees over the next 4.67 innings after being in deep trouble in the 1st inning ...... and Farrell chose to extend him an extra inning as a priority for his last-place team with no chance to make the postseason.

I hope that you had a happy 53rd birthday, Farrell.
