Buck Showalter On Glenn Clark Radio: 'We're Making Offers ... We'll Be Competitive

How many mid-level signings have we even made over the last ten years though?

How many guys have we given 10 plus mil over multiple seasons other than Ubaldo? The list is a short one. We have to be near the bottom of the league in free agent spending over a ten year period. With that said, we have resigned/extended several of our own guys during that time, which I'm not counting: Roberts, Markakis, Jones, Hardy.

It's different this year because Duquette has so much more money to spend this year. Like $40 million correct me if I'm wrong. He HAS to sign at least 2 just to refill the lineup.

I'm not sure they will sign two big ticket guys. I'm not convinced the payroll will be anywhere near 120 million. I would be surprised if they spend half of that number. And like someone said earlier signing guys that are at or below replacement is stupid. I guess to me that means signing more guys like Ulbaldo. You know could be good, could be bad types.

I couldn't find the interview. I would not call Buck a BS artist by any means but he and Dan sure do have a different opinion about our prospects than the rest of the baseball industry.

Sometimes it is the rest of the Baseball Industry that is wrong. Not always though.

I like the idea of a three year deal here.

There is no no upside to Buck saying that we have a below average system. He wants to encourage the guys on the farm to work hard and believe they have a shot at making an impact in the big leagues if they do so.

Sure, why not sign an injured relief pitcher to a long term guaranteed deal?

...it wouldn’t surprise me if the Orioles made runs at signing Ben Zobrist or Colby Rasmus, both of whom drew interest from Baltimore last winter. Since the O’s prefer shorter-term free agent deals in general, both could be good fits — Rasmus has said he may not want to play longer than a few more seasons, while Zobrist is entering his age-35 season and may not command too lengthy a contract. (Though a four-year deal isn’t out of the question for Zobrist since his versatility is expected to draw a large amount of interest in his services.)
Expect the O’s to look at Scott Kazmir, Marco Estrada, J.A. Happ or any other quality starters who posted Chen-like numbers in 2015 but could be signed on shorter-term deals than the four or even five years that Chen could command. Simply replacing Chen, of course, doesn’t solve Baltimore’s overall pitching issues. Either owner Peter Angelos shows a greater willingness to spend on free agent arms or else the Orioles will again be relying on a lot of things to go right for their incumbent starters.
Adam Lind (if the Brewers either don’t pick up his option or look to trade him) could be at least a passable replacement; while Lind isn’t an everyday option since he can’t hit left-handed pitching, he could be platooned with prospect Christian Walker, a right-handed bat. The Orioles could also look to trade for a similar left-handed first baseman like Ryan Howard or Adam LaRoche, or sign a potential non-tender candidate such as Pedro Alvarez or Logan Morrison. The soon-to-be-posted Byung-ho Park could also be a consideration.

Lind destroys right handed pitching (last year .291/.380/.503 and career .293/.354/.509). He could actually replace Davis in the lineup vs RHP in that capacity. He would have to be platooned, is all. The good news is, there is a lot more RHP than LHP in baseball; that's where you want the stronger part of the platoon.

If they can get their hands on Lind, they would save maybe $16 million they could really invest in other areas. But we're only talking about a one year team option. After next year the team will be looking again, barring extension.

And, they would have to trade for him.
