I didn't see the play but was Gentry just trying to steal third?   Maybe he had a bigger lead than normal.  I don't understand why you would try and steal third at that point unless it was part of a double steal.  But Buck said it was not.

Yeah, he was definitely running on the play. I think he just figured he could catch Doolittle napping because his run didn't matter.

It's just really a staggeringly dumb play given the circumstances.

May not be the bottom, but can sure see it from here.

At the bottom of MLB in:

Win % at .298

Losses at 40

GB at 21.5

Longest current losing streak at 6

Isn’t this the part of the movie where the manager finally decides to give Roy Hobbs a try? I think it’s when Bump Bailey crashes through the fence and is laid to rest two days later.

Unfortunately in this movie, the part of Roy Hobbs will be played by Colby Rasmus and his bad hip.  I'd settle for a sudden retirement by Chris Davis.

On pace for a  48-114 season.

Isn't that about what you'd expect if you moved an entire AA team into the MLB?

Yes, at our current .298 winning % (17-40), we're on pace for a 48-114 season.  I think the odds of us remaining at this pace are low, but losing 100 games is still very possible. If the over/under were at 100 losses, would you take the over or under?

Over.  The organization doesn’t seem to want to take drastic measures to shake things up.

Angelos has spent money.  There was a time in the late 90's when we had the highest payroll in baseball and it remained up there.   We had the worst team money could buy for some time.   They they kept losing and bottomed out with the payroll.   Now, once again, we have a payroll of a playoff team but not the talent that this payroll amount should have gotten.    Too many times when they have spent money, they have not spent wisely.

It all starts at the top.  Angelos thinks he's smarter than everyone else.   And more principled.    He wouldn't sign FA Cubans on principle.   He won't engage in the International market like other teams because he's smarter than everyone else.   He runs a baseball hierarchy where the assistant GM's opinion carries more weight than the GM.   He had a two headed GM at one time.   No respectable GM candidate even wanted to work for the Orioles after MacPhail left.

You guys still hate Dexter Fowler and think he screwed the Orioles.  Haha.   I give Fowler the benefit of the doubt.   The Orioles screwed that one up.  Remember how pissed off Fowler's agent was and Duquette barely defended the Orioles.    Too many cooks spoil the stew or whatever they say.   When you talk to the Orioles you don't know if you should be talking to DD, Brady, or one of the Angelos boys.   When in doubt, figure it was the Orioles who are in the wrong.   It all starts at the top.

Peter Angelos has spent money.  That hasn't been the problem.    He doesn't trust a baseball man to run his team and make the big decisions and he has always had a habit of butting in regarding FA's and even the amateur draft.

Agreed. But Dexter ain't good.

Quote

Mozeliak addressed veteran Dexter Fowler, in particular. The top St. Louis baseball executive offered some rather surprisingly pointed words on the respected and highly-paid Fowler:

“I’ve also heard a lot of people come up to me and question his effort and his energy level. Those are things that I can’t defend. What I can defend is trying to create opportunities for him, but not if it’s at the expense of someone that’s out there hustling and playing hard.”

I still maintain that Rock Bottom will be after appointing Brady/Buck as Co-GM and then the announcement that Adam Jones is extended thru his age 39 season. That's the kind of idiocy that I believe the franchise is still capable of.

    • If we don't want to trade one of our big three (or four?) prospects, then focusing on bad contracts or rentals is our only option to salvage this season.  Better to do that than to do nothing.  If we only do rentals, we'll need to add one or more starters over the offseason through free agency.  If Rubinstein has told Elias that he's willing to spend in free agency, then that reduces Elias' need to get a starter who is controllable beyond this year.
    • That STRK column in the standings is very persuasive.  Look elsewhere and you'll see that in spite of the L5 they still have the top run differential in the AL and are closer to the East lead than they were a week ago.
    • This is a mix of hitting two really hot teams, our pitching attrition, and just some bad luck. Everything is not going their way right now.  Sure, I think the rotation needs some help after losing Bradish, Means, Wells and Kremer and yes, Elias should have done more this offseason to sure up this pen (I was saying that all offseason and through spring), but when the team pitches good it doesn't hit and when they score a bunch, their pitching stinks.  This team was not going to continue on a 105-win pace with their pitching injuries, but luckily, the Yankees have not been playing great either after being lights out for awhile (while the Orioles were red-hot).  No this team is not going to go into a giant tailspin where they end up under .500 and yes, they will eventually break out of this. We saw in the schedule this was a tough stretch of opponents and lack of off days and it's just kind of caught up just as they hot two teams getting hot.  They're going to be fine when it comes to making the playoffs. Now, do they have a deep playoff caliber rotation and bullpen? No, I think they need to make moves, move that are going cost some players people don't want to see go, but when you have never drafted and developed a major league pitcher in 5 years of drafting, this is what your strategy was devised for.  Develop the bats, trade/acquire for the arms. Now it's time to see if Elias is able to fulfill his strategy.
    • Not addressing the bullpen other than a stopgap closer in the offseason is kinda coming home to roost now. Doesn't help that Cano and Perez haven't been very good either. The rotation has just been pure bad luck. When your 2/4/5 plus Wells are gone, sooner or later you are going to feel it. Irvin and Suarez have pitched above expectations but you gotta assume they are going to settle into mid-4 ERAs sooner or later. No idea what the front office is going to do by the deadline. It's a sellers market it seems. I will say I hope major moves are made between now and the start of the 25 season, because it is pee or get off the pot with a lot of these guys on the farm.  And if Burnes isn't back, there is a TON of pitching that needs to be added.
