PressBox: Manny not a Yankee

"I just look at the need," Singleton said. "Every team's looking for young players that are controllable for years, and they can kind of keep their overall team payroll down with these young players, particularly if they're good."

"When you look at teams who need shortstops, the Yankees don't need a shortstop," Singleton said. "They've got Gregorius, who's pretty good, and they've got this kid Andujar, who's only 23 years old, so the need is not there. If I were the Yankees -- and I've been around them -- I think they're going to need starting pitching going forward. Outside of [right-hander Luis Severino], all the others are, I wouldn't say iffy, they're just so-so, so to speak. So I think that their need is a starting pitcher and that's what they might be looking at in the free-agent market."

He's right.  I don't think Manny goes to NY.

BTW, significant cool off lately.  Batting .200 in June, .671 OPS.

Hopefully the Orioles trade Manny soon or he heats up again.   Not really liking this sitting on their hands strategy and waiting for something to go wrong.

Yuuuup.  Would have been nice to flip him while he was scorching hot.  But can you  really blame the FO for not predicting that a career .280 hitter would return to the mean?? :bangwall:

I've been saying I didn't think they were an overwhelming favorite this whole time.

Too many other teams have money now.  Folks have 2000 era Yankees on the brain.

His career, like most every other player, has it's peaks and valleys.  He starts off hot in April, cools off in May, and struggles more in July and September.  https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=machama01&year=Career&t=b

Yep, Manny was bound to cool off, and he has.    But hopefully he’s got some more hot streaks in him while he’s an Oriole.

I agree with Singleton that the Yankees have more important priorities to spend their money on.

They deliberately got under the cap this year to be able to reset and spend again this offseason.  Are they going to go after Harper?

I think it's correct that the NYYs wont be trading to rent Manny this year. But that doesn't mean they won't try to sign him as a free agent. They didn't "need" Stanton, but they acquired himand took on his salary to improve the team and create some fan excitement. Once they finish 2018 under the threshold for re-setting the tax, the money they would spend on Harper -- another OFer they don't "need" -- or Manny means very little to them. I think they'll take a long look at both of them in the off-season.

As much as I admired and liked Ken Singleton as a player, and he also seems like a pretty good guy, he really says some off-the-wall things as a NYY broadcaster, especially about the business side of the game. Singleton believes, or wants to believe, or is told to believe, that the NYYs succeed solely because the Steinbrenners, Cashman et al. are smarter, their managers are more effective and attentive, and their players are better human beings who try harder than their counterparts with other teams. His premise that the NYYs look at signing free agents the same way other teams do is of a piece with that.
