Tate also looked pretty good out of the bullpen. He gun had him at 97 on his 4 seamer and what looked like a two seamer at 93-94 and got a few ground balls on it. Off speed pitches were ineffective.

Nice to see his fastball playing up in relief.

I think most on this site have written this guy off. The arm talent alone makes him a potential bullpen arm, IMO. I'm not optimistic, but he has a better chance to be a BP guy than most guys throwing in the upper 80's.

I looked, but couldn't find, Luke's post about who needs to be placed on the 40-man roster this year. I fear he may be one of them. If so, I'd say he's a low priority to protect at this point.

[Going back and reading this thread, it wasn't clear this post was about Tate. It is. Not about Kremer, who is still a guy to be very high on.]

We already had to put him on the 40-man last offseason.    So far they’ve found other guys to DFA when they’ve needed a space.   We’ll see if that continues to be the case.

5 shutout innings, 2 hits, 2 walks, 8 K’s.   71 pitches, 45 for strikes.   He seems to have his act together.

His 5th inning was particularly impressive. He had the first batter struck out twice on grazing foul tips, but both popped out of Perez's glove. He ended up walking the batter and was visibly angry. He proceeded to absolutely carve up the next three batters to strike out the side.

I wonder why only 5 inning and 71 pitches you would think he could have came out for 6th.

Think if you read Luke’s description above you’d understand.   Sort of like when you take bp before a game, put two out and smoke 1/2 a dozen line drives, no reason to get back in the cage again.  End on a good note and come back later so you leave a good taste in your mouth.

Solid if unspectacular outing for Kremer today: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K’s.   Probably could have gotten another inning out of him but I think they wanted Baumann going 4.   1.96 ERA in his last 4 starts for Kremer.

My thinking was they wanted to get Baumann some work. They have too many starters at Bowie. I expect them to move Lowther and Kremer up to make room for Baumann and maybe Sedlock in the next week or so.

Lowther would be the guy, but even still, I’ve turned into a big believer of the one level at a time, but it might be time. Polished college pitcher.  Has dominated every level.  He’s 23, so he’s not some kid.

We’re in no rush. I’d definitely pump the brakes on Kremer. He’s just now getting back to being who he was a year ago. Maybe you give him a taste of Norfolk in August. Baumann needs AA starts, but I’d be fine letting Sedlock gain some confidence or pitch out the pen in AA to finish out. I’m sure he’s on an IP limit.

Looks like he may not have had his best stuff last night but was able minimize damage. Signs of a guy who could stick as a starter. I’m still most excited about him from our “haul” last year. I think we see him get a few starts in September if we end up trading Cashner.

Out of the upper level SP prospects, I'd think Akin, Lowther and Wells all get starts in Baltimore before Kremer does.  Possibly Zimmermann too.

I don’t necessarily think that’s the case.   Kremer would probably be in AAA right now if he hadn’t started the year on the IL.   Let’s not forget he had 52 innings of AA experience last year.   He isn’t putting up the numbers of Lowther, Wells and Zimmermann just now, but his arsenal may be more effective against major league hitters than those three’s.    I’m not stating that as a certain fact, but it’s possible O’s management will see it that way.

    • Yeah, I'm kinda under the assumption that it's gonna be a while. He looked really bad the first time and the team is performing without him. No reason to rush.
    • Well I hope Rubenstein knew that when he purchased the team.
    • I don’t know. Heading into this season, I said I didn’t feel Gunnar’s defense at SS was so good that we should just assume Holliday doesn’t end up there.    Holliday does need to work on his arm strength and my assumption was always that he would. Now, maybe that assumption is wrong, I don’t know but at his age and time in development and the size of Gunnar, I still felt Holliday at SS and Gunnar at third would be the best total defensive lineup long term.  That doesn’t necessarily mean Holliday would be the better SS but that the combo of the 2 would be the best alignment (this also thinking Gunnar would be GG level at third but not SS) This year, I feel Gunnar has looked similar at SS although OAA likes him a lot more this year than last but stats like UZR and UZR/150 don’t. He is 36th in MLb in DRS and 6th at SS (4th in AL).  I was actually surprised to see his arm is “only” in the 77th percentile.     I can see Gunnar being a high OAA guy because I think his athleticism will simply allow him to make plays most players can’t. I think it’s fair to say that Gunnar is an above average defensive SS but how far above average is he and is he truly an elite defender at SS?  I don’t think so but maybe he can develop into one?  I feel confident he would be at third. I have said for a while that all the defensive alignment stuff will be wrapped around where Holliday and Gunnar end up. For now, it seems obvious Holliday isnt a SS option this year unless an injury occurs.    As to how that could change, I think it depends on Holliday. I still seriously doubt he ends up in CF. It’s not like he would be the first converted SS to end up out there and that’s arguably a more premium position than SS in todays game because of all the FB pitchers but it would still surprise me to see that be the long term move. I also think we are overlooking the Westburg factor here. They may believe, even with the arm not being overly strong, that he is the third baseman of the future.  Saying that, I have never doubted that Mayo could stick at third. I believe he can. I just didn’t believe it would happen here and I still don’t.   I still think he ends primarily at RF and first base.
    • I remember last year against St Louis was incredibly frustrating.  They won the first game 1-0 in a game started by Drew Rom, who we had traded over to them.  Then the second game, the corpse of Adam Wainwright shut us down.  He was throwing junk up there and stymied us for 5 innings.  We won the third 11-5 but we were almost 30 games better than them win wise and I remember thinking 2 out of 3 should be minimum we took all things considered.  Hopefully we pay them back this year with a sweep.  Would like Gibby to have a nice year with a huge blemish due to us in Game 3.  9 runs sounds about right.
    • Certainly the one who’s putting himself out there the most.
    • 1. Mayo’s defense at 3B has improved.  Not saying it’s even average but maybe. 2. Mullins slumps are scary and even if he rebounds he’s not here long term. 3. Mateo (I know! I know!) is impersonating a ML hitter, with GG caliber defense and game changing speed.
    • I think there are some similarities. In this day and age, cops can pretty much lateral to any dept in the country due to shortages everywhere. The guys you work with can be stand-up dudes, it's command staff that usually makes the job suck for its officers, and much like a clubhouse you can have a bad squad. Burnes won't have 30 options during the offseason, I suspect. He probably has 5 or 6 teams who would possibly pay what he's asking for.
