Really like this pick.  Good value here in round 5 taking a 17 year old while so many others are already taking senior signs and reliever profiles.  Have to point out the lack of ranking on this prospect yet multiple sources chiming in with a third to fifth round buzz. Trust your scouts.  Understand there are consensus seekers like Callis, but lots of organizations also putting out a lot of mis-information.

Sounds like he's from a place that doesn't get a lot of eyes too. Popped up late, young. I like it.

Have to see.  Just my opinion, but if PG has a report on the kid and he participated in the area code games, then shame on the team(s) that is unaware of him.  Now, some teams may have seen him and written him off, but that's another story.  IMO, following the Os drafts for a long time, we have pretty good map coverage in finding kids.  Not sure if that is because we have a lot of scouts or if our scouts know a lot of guys who can refer in prospects, but I think we do well with prospects like this.

But how many guys go to those showcase events already known to evaluators? They're literally watching most guys on the field. If there's another dude that's relatively unknown and doesn't particularly put on a show that week, I think he can be missed. It seems like this guy really didn't get out there that much until recently. However, he was known enough to have several team visits and ultimately get picked at 5/1, so he must have made a decent enough impression.

Our 5th Round picks since Arrieta:

Robert Neustrom, Lamar Sparks, Alexis Torres, Jason Heinrich, David Hess, Travis Seabrooke, Colin Poche, Matt Taylor, Connor Narron, Ashur Toliver, Greg Miclat

Guys here are gonna have warts. This guy seems interesting, sounds like he has some tools and potential.

5th round tends to be where you start taking some reaches with upside and guys that you can save some money on. Our previous 5th rounders have not exactly lit up the minors. :D

Darell Hernaiz is a 2019 SS/2B with a 6-0 150 lb. frame from El Paso, TX who attends Americas HS. Slender young athletic build, lots of room to get stronger. Second base tools on defense, has quick feet and stays balanced well, has smooth actions and funnels well, soft hands, arm strength is presently short unless moving through the ball. Right handed hitter, hits from an even stance with a deep hand load, loose swing with a mid field to opposite field approach, steers the barrel to the ball, high contact swing, should continue to improve as he gets stronger. Verbal commitment to Texas Tech.

Been watching a bunch of video of this kid, I really like him, I'm guessing the only thing that kept him from being more high profile or an earlier selection is lack of facing top competition since getting bigger and stronger.

He's a 70 runner, 6.44 60 yard, the swing works and is fairly advanced (probably helps that his dad played pro ball), he does a good job getting his foot down and catching the ball out in front. He's got fluidity to his fielding motions and quick hands. The arm doesn't look like a SS arm, so that's something to keep an eye on.

Need to see him versus premium velocity and offspeed stuff, still needs to get stronger, but I like the swing and athleticism.

David Hess is currently getting lit up in the majors. ☹️
