I don’t get it either. He might be better than McKenna but this could also be a push.

This doesn’t make us that much better or worse.

It would seem like a push to me, and McKenna is making league min while Phillips is making $1.4mm (or whatever is left of it for the rest of the season) AND we had to pay to get him. Very bizarre in my opinion.

The roster has him going to the minors.

Phillips is out of options, so he would have to be DFA'd. Why would we pay cash for someone if we don't plan on keeping him? While I like Phillips and he seems to be a fun guy, this trade is a bit strange.

Phillips has more upside than McKenna, IMO.

Not sure how much that really matters when discussing backup/part-time OFs on a non-contending team though.

This must be the buying Elias was referring to when he said we'd be both buyers and sellers.

I would hope they were trying to buy pitchers with multiple years of control, but the trades fell through. I wouldn’t really call this buying at the trade deadline. This is just picking up another teams scraps for depth.

    • What if Holliday has a UCL injury? If the thought of a UCL injury holds you up from trading for Skubal, then you might as well only ever trade for rentals.
    • I posed the question of Holliday or Skenes in a thread several months ago. It was near unanimous that people would want Holliday. I was pretty lonely advocating for Skenes, but it was with the playoffs in mind that I did.
    • Vs RHP - Santa RF, Cowser LF, Mullins CF, O'Hearn 1B, Heston DH Vs LHP - Santa RF, Hays LF, Mullins CF, Mountcastle 1B, Adley DH with McCann catching like usual.
    • I think he's just doing what he's always done. For a guy who can look incredibly bad for weeks at a time and go heaters as crazy as anyone on the team, he is remarkably consistent from year to year. Aside from the pandemic year, he has been 108-120 OPS+, .250-.270, .305-.328, .729-.796, 1.5-1.9 WAR. He is on track for another Mountcastle year of good-not-great performance with plus power, low walks, and a lot of bad swing decisions.
    • Mayo is a RH power hitter, and we need him going forward to balance the LH studs on our roster.  Basallo looks to have huge power, and may be able to stick at catcher which could make him one of the most valuable players in the game.  Holliday will likely be a really good hitter for average and OB%, but is the easiest (right now) to replace within the system. He's also the guy who gets you the most value coming back.  I see Mayo as 99% untouchable. Basallo as 80% untouchable. Holliday 60%. Anybody can be had for the right return, but it better be a monster return.
    • I wouldn't lump Crochet in with Skubal.  Also, we'd get Skubal for 3 postseasons.  I don't really care about the .5 season.   In no way am I not over the moon for Holliday, but if you get a chance to get arguably the best pitcher in the AL for 3 seasons then you do it.  Also, he's a lefty in OPACY.  It's an auto-trade for me.  No hesitation.
    • Even in the last 30 days when Mullins has been hot with a 144 wRC+, he has a 0.8 WAR in 91 PA’s to Cowser’s 0.6 WAR in 77 PA’s. Cowser still has a 116 wRC+ against RHP’s and is a top 5 defensive OF’er according to Fangraphs. There is no reason he should not be starting against a RHP. His ceiling and floor are both higher than Hays or Mullins. Split the other OF’er/DH AB’s against RHP’s between Mullins/Kjerstad/Mountcastle.
