I think they really would move heaven and earth to keep Mateo.   I think they see his legs winning a close game in the playoffs.

have no problem with him off the bench, but not if it means as a defensive sub to move Henderson to 3rd, Urias or Westburg out of the game and one moved to 2B. Because his defense is not better.

They don’t want to F with the team mojo by callously jettisoning a guy who has been a big part of the young team for more than a year. His role is “evolving”

That's part of it too.  It's not the largest part of it but it's the least acknowledged.

I admit I thought it made no sense to move the best defender off shortstop. The last few weeks though it seemed there wasn't much difference between Mateo and Gunnar on defense. I guess they keep Mateo this year, but with Ortiz moving up and Mullins coming back it doesn't seem like there is a spot for him in 2024.

Interesting.  This positioning would suggest they think Jorge is the superior defender than McKenna in CF.

Very interesting.

Maybe.  I think what it really means is that CF is probably easier for someone without a ton of experience in the OF.

I’m not sure if it’s least acknowledged. They talk all the time about how great the chemistry is in the clubhouse and on the field with the team. Maybe we as fans don’t acknowledge it enough. In that case I’ll agree with you.

I'm kind of curious to see him out there, only because I want to see him hit top speed to take away something in the gap.

But I'm not THAT curious because of how bad he is at the plate.  They obviously think there's something in him that's worth saving.  We'll never know the details but I'd love to find out...they're bending over backwards to keep him.

While I'm sure Mateo is a great guy and probably a passable (maybe even better) center fielder,  the bottom line is that the guy can't hit.

It's a great idea to have a guy that can fill in all over the field, but if he can't hit, he's not very useful.

Agree.

I think the chemistry argument cuts both ways.

I mean, we all played Little League with a kid who was an automatic out.  I don't think the idea of "Aw, ****, look who's up with two outs and is about to kill our rally," leaves someone's mind just because they're in the Majors.

But by all accounts, he's a great guy.  I just think SigBot and Elias think there's something they can tap into to fix him.  There's no other logical explanation I can think of.
