Gotta wonder if this opens the door for McDermott at all?  If he comes to camp and is impressive, he could find himself on the OD roster.

You never know but I still kinda doubt it. This just puts Irvin and Wells back in the running for the rotation, i.e. the status quo pre-Burnes. I don't see Elias making a 40 man roster addition unless absolutely necessary and we're not there yet.

Go get Cease.  Offer up Cowser or Kjerstad to lead the package and get it done.  You have the ability to do it and you have the need now..not to mention he is here next year, which helps with the loss of Burnes.

If you get lucky and Bradish comes back this year, even better.

Cease is definitely back in the fold.  Especially since it looks like both Cowser and Kjerstad will start the season in the minors.  Trading one of them for Cease is definitely prospect value well spent.

Cease isn't a realistic option.

Getz's previous demands for him were already silly and that was when he had much less leverage.

It's Ryu/Lorenzen/Clevinger or bust now.

RIght now the OD rotation looks like Burnes, Grayson, Kremer, Wells, Irvin.

Bradish throws a lot of sliders..gotta wonder if that has anything to do with this?  Does it put more stress on the elbow?

I have to admit, while I always worry about pitchers injuries, Grayson was the one that I was really worried about.  Hopefully that doesn’t come to fruition.

The "data" I am referencing is the fact that the overwhelming majority of UCL sprains still result in TJS. There are only a handful of notable cases where PRP successfully negated the need for TJS.

Obviously that isn't exactly scientific, but I have followed general baseball news for many years and have read "pitcher X tried PRP but will now going to undergo surgery because it didn't work" more times than I have read "pitcher X tried PRP and he's totally fine now," and it's not even remotely close.

Yeah this just doesn't justify your statement that (and I'm paraphrasing) "we absolutely know TJS is where this is going", in my opinion.

None of us know the details of the sprain, or the actual success rate of PRP technology in 2024. This study was circulated on twitter this morning and it shows reasonably high odds for success for low-grade sprains:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33796592/

I have no idea how credible it is. But given Elias' comments that they're pursuing this approach with some level of optimism, I'm just not ready to say TJS is absolutely where this is going.

Oh well.

An arm only has so many bullets in it before it needs TJ.  If he had it in January, it was gonna happen in camp.  They all break, it's just a matter of time.

What are you possibly talking about? All pitchers arms break? Tommy John surgery is relatively new. Plenty of pitchers arm end up not breaking.

Have to agree here. Our leverage sucks and Elias isn't going to suddenly sell the farm for Cease like Getz wants him to.

True, McDermott could sneak into the bullpen. I'd still say Tate and Baker are probably ahead of him to start the year.

Roch did say Means "might not" make opening day. He still could, maybe as an opener until he gets stretched out. Assuming all goes well and there's nothing else they're hiding from us.

I figured Bradish would be more vulnerable to shoulder issues at some point. I’m not panicked at all, but between these two injuries we should find another starter. I like Wells more than most however. I wouldn’t mind seeing Mateo dealt for a reliever as well.

Took the words out of my mouth. If we haven’t gotten Cease yet, we sure as hell aren’t now.

Add Montgomery to that list now. I’d probably offer him 6 years. Yes it sounds stupid but that is just how contracts are now.

We haven't had to deal with pitching tears/injuries in a long time.  Give it a week and we'll all be orthopedic surgeons in our own minds.

My question would be... with a partial tear, how much does it have to be torn to necessitate a full surgery?  I guess we'll find out.

There’s no need to panic and be irrational. Kjersted and Cowser are not being traded. Irvin, Wells, Kremer can handle the workload.

    • I just don't trust that Luzardo is healthy even if he's controllable for a couple more years.
    • That’s interesting.      Kjerstad and Povich for Crochet?
    • Well, yes and no.  It still remains to be seen how high attendance can go.   Let’s say that attendance this year falls 150,000 short of 2014.   (I’m not saying it will, but that’s not implausible at present.)   At that point, I think you have to ask why.  That 2014 team was in its third straight winning season and was the best team we’d had in a long time.  This 2024 team is in its third straight winning season and is probably the best team we’ve had in several decades.   So how did we lose 150,000 fans (if that turns out to be the situation)?   The O’s were 14th in MLB in attendance in 2014, they’re 18th now despite the great team they have.
    • Eno Sarris of The Athletic Two who might just make it Cade Povich, Orioles The four-seam fastball almost landed Povich on the worrisome warts list because it’s not good. It has less ride than most four-seamers and sits 92 mph, a full two ticks below league average. Stuff+ hates the pitch (73) and that lines up with the FanGraphs scouting grades (45 present value), but he’s managed to locate it almost exclusively at the top of the zone and (so far) out of the happy zones (.190 slugging against). If you’ve read this far, the caveat for Povich will be of no surprise: His cutter looks decent, and he featured it more heavily in his second start. That pitch has more vertical and horizontal break than the average cutter, hums along at a decent 88 mph, and though it’s been hit hard so far, has better underpinnings for future success. The best news for Povich is a decent mix of three secondary pitches: an above-average sweeper, a big slow curveball, and a changeup that doesn’t have much to speak for it movement or velocity-wise but hasn’t allowed great contact so far (.200 slugging). Povich got a 45 current command grade and a 60 future from FanGraphs, and there’s a gulf between those numbers. If he succeeds, it’s as a command-and-mix guy who throws just enough four-seamers and cutters to keep the batter guessing. This is not the profile of a pitcher who will overpower hitters with any of his pitches. It’s also worth pointing out that the league is getting better and better at hitting sweepers, which might not be a great thing for this starter, as that pitch grades out the best of all of his offerings.
    • Going up against a LHP, so you know we're going to see McCann. There will be lots of complaining.
    • Our whole outfield situation is very unsettled.  It would be hard to guess today who will be starting playoff games in the OF, other than Santander.   I’m hoping Cowser eventually takes off again, but he’s been pretty tough to watch at times over the last 6 weeks. Stowers could grab a spot.  Hays has been hot of late and we’ll see if that continues.   Mullins has sucked for 6-7 weeks but I haven’t given up on the guy.   Kjerstad continues to rake in the minors and you have to think he’ll get another opportunity at some point.  It’s just really hard to know how the rest of this season will go for our outfielders and who will be hot when playoff time comes.
