So Maddux would have been a better closer than Smoltz--using this logic. GRod is the obvious answer.

You likely don't want the guy who has the worst fastball by run value closing on your team. Well, I don't want him closing on mine, anyway.

I would downvote you but you seem ok so far.  Easy question.  Easy premise.   And you have to reject the concept?

At least somewhat in jest.

and I was dealing with someone obnoxious at work, so probably being argumentative as well.

but I guess also because if you ignore their starter value loss, it’s basically asking who is your best pitcher. In which case i cannot fathom any argument for kremer, Irvin, means, Suarez to even be options. And wells only gets a note because he’s the only one who has done it before.

but I suppose purely to be whimsical, I would probably say Burnes given his track record, or bradish due to his stuff and not being quite as susceptible to first inning damage as Burnes (and Grayson).

The question has nothing to do with who would become the closer, who the team would move to closer, which pitcher would accept the switch.  Nada.

Sorry if I am out of compliance with the thread police.

When you look at career numbers rather than just this year, Burnes fares better than the players you mentioned.

Lol, so in your made up situation that doesn't take into effect the loss of said pitcher, only takes in career stats and not this season! 👍

You’re out of compliance with common sense.

The only common sense in this made up thread is when you and some others decide to add some into under your rules. Can't make this stuff up. lol

Of course, I didn’t say that.  In fact, my earlier post cited both his career numbers and this year’s numbers and I said I’d probably go with Bradish.  But I think it’s appropriate to consider his career numbers as well as this year’s.

What rules?   The OP is simple and straightforward.  Which starter do you think would make the best closer?    You can argue about which one that is and why.  What defies common sense is when someone argues that Burnes wouldn’t agree to it or that we can’t afford to lose a pitcher from the rotation.

One thing you got right is that it’s make believe.  Apparently some people are incapable.

If you’re upset that a couple people pointed out that Burnes first inning problems this year don’t necessarily make him a bad potential closer, oh well.

I'm already dreading the Thursday off day.

I’m planning a thread on which of our pitching and hitting coaches would make the best third base coach.
