Manny Ramirez will be suspended 50 games for positive drug test

I don't buy that, and I don't believe that Jose does either...once he takes off his "Pied Piper of Steroids" costume. You can be as strong as you wanna be--by whatever means--but if you lack the hand-eye coordination necessary to hit a fastball, you aren't getting to the show. Period.

Well, we just don't know. Yes, he was athletic and strong. Yes, his ability to hit a baseball was pretty good. But the diff between harmless F7's and dingers, the diff between easy GB's and sharp liners, is just a teensy-weensy micro-fraction of an inch about exactly where you hit it. That tiny difference is the diff between a AAA guy and a ML hitter. So, could be...

As Bill Simmons would say (and probably will in a column posted in the next five minutes), Manny Ramirez is officially in the Tyson Zone: he can do anything and it's no longer surprising.

If it's just a prescription thing, my thought would be that it just wasn't reported by Ramirez. However, the NFL is still working through their legal injunctions from last season relating to a group of players testing positive for a banned substance that the league reportedly did not list on their hotline or any list as banned. So something like that could just be a combination of stupidity.

Plus, he said in his statement that he has passed 15 tests over the past five seasons, so one would think it would have been found out sooner if he was doing anything.

However, if it really ends up being a drug that helps you recover from your PED use that he was taking, that changes everything.

It turns out the most honest man in baseball is Jose Canseco. He seems to be batting 1.000 when it comes to naming players who used steroids. It was just a couple months ago he said he was 90 percent sure Manny had used them.

Canseco is a jerk but he obviously isnt lying about this. His professional opinion of who took steriods is pretty accurate.

The fertility drugs are used to bump your testosterone, which your body stops making when you've hit the juice for a while.

Canseco was detained (last year?) bringing this stuff across the border near San Diego.

Canseco had the same problem if anyone has ever watched that documentary on him.

Hmmmm...speculation...but putting two and two together, I think we may have found our next big steroid user..

Apparently "sources close to Manny" say that it was a drug for erectile dysfunction, and other sources say it was a gonadotropin, which wouldn't be the normal first course of treatment for run-of-the-mill ED that could be treated with Viagra or Cialis. It sounds like Manny really has himself in a public relations pickle. It's going to be very hard to convince people that an MLB player in his late 30s got ED from anything other than steroids, particularly if said ED was being treated with an extreme drug that is usually used if the man's testicles aren't functioning due to steroid use.

I feel bad for the guy even if he is obnoxious. If this is true, not only is he impotent at a very young age, but he's being humiliated now for a mistake he made years ago and might have thought quite differently about if the decision had been made in today's climate. He's also very obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed, so I'm guessing there was someone (agent?) who talked him into the original involvement with PEDs.

Ramirez took hCG. A female fertility drug used to restart your bodies' natural testosterone production as they come off a steroid cycle.

From ESPN, 5/7 @ 6:42 PM -

However, testing by Major League Baseball showed that Ramirez had testosterone in his body that was not natural and came from an artificial source, two people with knowledge of the case told ESPN's Mark Fainaru-Wada and T.J. Quinn. The sources said that in addition to the artificial testosterone, Ramirez was identified as using the female fertility drug human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG.

The sources said Ramirez was suspended for using hCG because baseball had documentation to prove his use of the drug. A Major League Baseball source said Ramirez's representatives indicated they would fight a suspension for using artificial testosterone.

ESPN reported earlier that testing showed Ramirez had used hCG, which is typically used by steroid users to restart their bodies' natural testosterone production as they come off a steroid cycle. It is similar to Clomid, the drug Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi and others used as clients of BALCO.

Ramirez's case was set off when a test in spring training revealed he had elevated levels of testosterone in his body. MLB followed up with a more comprehensive test that confirmed the testosterone had to come from an artificial source, the sources said.

While investigating, MLB obtained documents that indicated Ramirez's use of hCG, and it was those documents that formally were used to hand down the 50-game suspension. Baseball decided to suspend Ramirez for only hCG because, in the end, he would have only been suspended for just the 50 games either way. There was a chance Ramirez could have proved that the testosterone did not come from a banned substance, the MLB source said.

MLB Network had some player reactions. Ortiz seemed quite bothered. Lowell seemed disappointed. Papelbon was his usual douche self. Carlos Pena was pretty upset about it and spoke about how he played as Ramirez on Sega when he was younger.

In summary, the players they interviewed were pretty down about it and Papelbon is a tool.
