Tejada and Bedard talk

Why is there always the negative outlook? Maybe Bedard has a 20+ win season, sets the ML K record, and wins the Cy Young. His value would be off the charts?
His value still wouldn't be much higher than it is right now, if at all, because he'd only have one year left. Johan Santana is essentially the scenario you just outlined, and its very possible that Bedard has more value than him right now. The full two years against only one makes a huge difference in a guy's value.

Of course that could happen.

But you are still trying to play the odds here...The odds tell you that Bedard, who is coming off a great season and is still cheap for TWO more seasons, is at his peak value right now.

I think the odds of Bedard declining or getting hurt are better than the chances of him doing what you are proposing...

Remember what happens when you assume...

The Orioles are great at assuming...

Especially when you factor in how harmful an injury plagued year would be to his value versus whatever benefit there would be from a dominating year.

Even if he's a stud next year, his value is probably higher right now than it would be next offseason. I could see his value increasing between now and the trade deadline, but it will certainly start going down after July 31st.

Great piece?

As in the third player in the deal. I know you aren't a big fan, but if the first two players are A prospects, I think he is a solid 3rd piece to a deal. I know he is a bit old for a prospect and Ks too often, but he has good power and I think he is an everyday player at the next level.

I don't see Koshansky as any better than Scott Moore.

Well, that is a fair comparison. So as a third piece in a deal for Bedard (if there is also a 4th piece) he could be worth the roll.

Now, I would rather do a 3 player deal with the Dodgers or the D-Backs, however, I see Koshansky as someone who could develop into a #5-6 hole hitter.

Yea i need more than that.

I don't think the Rockies are a good match for what this team needs.

It wasnt really the offer rather it was more the way the O's handled it.

Yep Duquette's "mother may I" relationship with Angelos really screwed the pooch on that one. I suspect MacPhail already has an idea of what he can and can't do from Angelos going into the offseason so a situation like that doesn't happen again. Something tells me MacPhail doesn't like looking like an idiot...

But do we really know what the story is between Andy and PA? I mean AM hasnt really come out and layed out a realistic gameplan. I hope he does soon after the WS. I just am tired of smoke and mirrors. And that AM has the reigns here.

    • I'm not discounting anything, really.  I'm sure there's a reason for his recent struggles.   Playing devil's advocate with the "old" argument, there's no reason he couldn't have just hit a wall.  I think getting old for different players manifests itself in different ways and maybe he'll be effective for some stretches but ineffective for longer ones?  It's hard to say. I'm leaning towards that he's not fully healthy but that's probably a byproduct of being old, too.  10 years ago, this wouldn't have been a big workload for him, now it is.  He could withstand this usage at one point in his career, he can't now.  That's because he's worn down a bit.
    • Exactly. He’d get the McKenna treatment quick out the gate. “Can’t hit! Can’t field! He just cost us the game! What is he even doing on the team!” It’d be hilarious if it weren’t so predictable.
    • Ryan developed Hunter Harvey's situation last night.
    • I think Urias is a guy (like a lot of guys) who benefits from consistent playing time.  I think his defense won't really slump, but when he's getting consistent at bats he's not a hole in the lineup.   It would be absolutely hilarious to see the "how bad could his defense be?" crowd to start eviscerating players who have been advertised as average defenders.  I want to see Mayo as much as everyone else outside of Roy, but I'm under no illusion he's an asset with the glove at third.
    • Many ways up the mountain and there are plenty of other relievers who put up similar numbers and would command far less. If you look at production, Danny Coulumbe is having a similar year for us. Finnegan is alright, Yates is good, Clase, Robertson, there are a few guys that deliver similar results without the flash of 103 and there are also diamonds in the rough like Danny or like Suarez that can give you the same level but without the flash. I trust our scouts to find those guys as they have time and time again.
    • Closer by committee or not, the issue with the pen is that you need a guy with superb strikeout numbers to tilt the odds in extras with the ghost runner.  That is one of the hidden values in a guy like Bautista that gave us such a competitive advantage in 1 run games (in particular in extra innings). That and he could go for more than 3 outs (like he did 9 times last year). Luckily our team is better this year so we are not as reliant on winning close games. However, the day will come (in the postseason) where we will need to win a “battle of the bullpens” type of game. Right now I don’t like our odds in that scenario (especially if we were facing a team like the Yankees).
    • Again, it doesn’t matter who is on the other side of this equation. The question is, what do you do with Urias?  The other part is easy.
