Matusz rubs off his curse on the rest of the team. When Matusz makes an appearance in the game:

1. The hitters go back to vintage 2011 performance (i.e. bad), except Reynolds who continues to be absolutely useless unless he can work a walk.

2. The fielders make ridiculous errors left and right.

3. Everyone has low morale and just rolls over without making the opposing pitchers work.

The performance of the team seems strongly swayed by the performance of the starter. It's why Arrieta wins so many games and Matusz loses so many. A winning attitude and a commanding presence on the mound garners wins; a losing attitude and a lack of confidence on the mound garners losses. It doesn't necessarily HAVE to be this way (if everyone had no emotions), but it works out that way in practice.

The good news is, Brian Matusz isn't pitching tomorrow. Hopefully he won't even be in the dugout. Hopefully he won't even be in the stadium complex. Or in the same state. They should send him to Florida.
