Attendance to Date: 12.5% Over 2011

The attendance increase from 2011 to 2012 is now down to 183,167, having dropped about 70,000 in the last four days. That is because the comparable series last year was a weekend series with the Yankees.

From here on out, attendance should increase significantly over last year. Our next four games are with the Yankees, compared to four dates last year where the Orioles only drew about 56,000 fans. So, the O's will recover the 70,000 they lost the last four games, and then some. From there on out, I still expect 2012 attendance to be higher than it was for the comparable dates last year. The 2011 O's only had two crowds over 30,000 fans after the Yankees left town; I'm pretty certain that all three games against Boston the final week of the season will easily top that figure. The real issue is whether the fans will continue to be apathetic when we play Tampa at home on September 11-13 and Toronto on September 24-26. For attendance purposes, we have one less home date remaining than last year, due to the rained out Toronto game that is now part of a single admission doubleheader on Sept. 24. That will cost the O's some fans on their final tally.

Remember the tickets from the rain-out can be traded in for the any of the Toronto or Tampa games so those games will draw those extra fans that they may not have otherwise due to the rain-out. Unfortunately for those fans, they are trading in tickets for a weekend game for a weekday game. On the flip side, if they so choose, they can get to see two games for the price of one on September 24. In fact, September 24 may also draw more fans than they might have otherwise, as everyone gets two for the price of one. Therefore, it is possible to get a small bump, as opposed to a drop, in total sales due to the rain-out. In short, I think the amount lost, if any will be negligible when looking at the tickets sold for the season as a whole.

On the radio on the way into the city yesterday, they were talking about the ticket situation and Saturday is already sold out and both today and Sunday are getting close. It would not surprise me if all four games are over 40K and maybe even sell outs.

It looks like Friday is getting close to a sell out as well....I wonder why Saturday sold out so quickly? MFY fans traveling?

My guesstimate is 60K for the TB series, 55K for Toronto, 100K for Boston, total for the year 2,040,000.

I think they'll beat 100,000 for Boston rather handily. One of those is the Brooks statue game, and if the O's are still in the race, I think all three will be 40,000 plus. And I suspect the promotion they are running for the Tampa series may push the crowds over 20,000.

    • You have basically answered your own question. If Grayson didn’t agree he could file a grievance. He didn’t so one might assume, regardless of how serious, he agrees with the course of action.
    • We’ve gone to 2 Monday games and one Tuesday game. Ive gotten tickets for $37 apiece after fees in section 52 and then Move up a few rows to all the empty seats. Amazing seats to watch a game. This last Monday I paid $65 apiece for section 52 vs the yanks. People from NY paid $100 off SeatGeek. He said that these seats in NY would be $500 apiece. Ticket prices are pretty cheap for Os games right now. And on a Monday you could buy a cheaper seat and then move closer if you really wanted to.  Now food prices are a different story. Just buy a hoagie somewhere and bring it in.  Looking at the Toronto Monday, sec 52 is way cheaper than it was for the Yankees. Sec 59 is $19 on SeatGeek including fees. you can make it affordable but I don’t pay for parking in Timonium and I have passes for the light rail.
    • Whose better than Cowser on defense?  How does Norby look out there?
    • what about just waiting for Bautista to come back and use those type of players to get a good starter with some control?
    • I think those stats are from before his last two appearances.  He gave up a home run today to Gleyber Torres.
    • I was happy with what I saw. I honestly went into it not expecting much. He had a few rough spots but didn't totally crumble. Really encouraging!
    • The A’s will have no use for Stowers as a serious trade chip. Maybe he’s a throw in along with the major pieces? But he in no way is equivalent of Kjerstad or Cowser.  Furthermore if you have questions/concerns about Cowser, you don’t think they will? You don’t think that they are aware of his issues and that their evaluators/scouts can watch film of him butchering plays? Kjerstad is 25 now (already in his prime). Why would the A’s trade Miller for him? Miller has 5 more years of control. Their whole rationale for wanting to move Miller is to sacrifice the now for the later (buying years in the future and sacrificing the present). They are likely to want guys who are you and/or guys further away from MLB but still have tremendous upside. Povich/McDermott/Johnson? I guess they can be used as add ons. But I can’t see those kind of guys being main pieces for an EXTREMELY VALUABLE commodity like Miller. Miller has the ability to be the best late inning weapon in the sport and he has FIVE more years of control after this season. That kind of player is not going to be acquired for spare parts. We are going to have to beat other offers for him.
