True, but the point is that we're just barely a southern state by certain definitions of the term. Geographically, we're barely southern. In the civil war, we were northern. In the 1700s and 1800s, we didn't have much in the way of urban areas to speak of. In 2012, we have a lot of farmland in Southern Maryland and on the Eastern Shore, but most of western Maryland from about the Greenbelt area up through Baltimore and Ellicott City, Towson, etc. is as urban and as northern as it comes.
