Because the writers said so last week.

You aren't a newbie and you should know that typically appeal hearings on performed on one of their day offs.

That is, if Manny decides to appeal, last I heard, he hadn't decided.

I remember Frobby speculating that it would be today, but I didn't read anything else to that regard. Do you have a link.

Well he already decided he was going to appeal, that's what kept the suspension from starting immediately. Whether he drops his appeal or has a hearing technically remains to be seen, but dropping an appeal prior to a hearing is a procedural move I have only seen used for pitchers so that they miss the minimum number of starts or relief appearances (drop the appeal the day after they start or the day after they have pitched in two consecutive games with the effect being shortening the suspension by a day).

I don't know why a position player would drop his appeal (except maybe a catcher in a day game after a night-game situation), suspensions are never lengthened upon appeal.

This is the best I could find. Still looking for the writers who said it would be definitely today: A date for Machado’s appeal hearing — which will be heard by John McHale Jr., the special assistant to the commissioner — has not yet been set, but appeals are typically arranged within a few weeks of the initial ruling. Scheduling depends somewhat on both parties’ schedules and availability, but the league office attempts to expedite the process. For comparison, suspensions and appeals for the incident between Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor and Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista after Odor punched Bautista followed a hard slide at second base, were completed within 12 days of the initial incident. http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles/blog/bal-orioles-manny-machado-given-four-game-suspension-will-appeal-punishment-20160609-story.html

So I think Manny's a great player, but I've pretty much convinced myself at this point that we have to trade him during the offseason:

1. I don't think he's re-signing here. I don't think he hates it here, but I think he wants brighter lights and more importantly more money than the O's will be willing to spend.

2. We could get a king's ransom for him at this point and give the organization a badly needed infusion of young talent.

3. The attitude really worries me. So far it's remained somewhat in check - but you give him a huge contract and he almost seems certain to me to start to be a clubhouse issue.

The #1 reason above really is the most important - if the O's think he's going to require something beyond what they want to pay, they have to consider making a move soon (and by soon, I mean this offseason).

Good Article by Melewski and talks with Coolbaugh

?You watch guys that come up that are extremely talented,? Coolbaugh said. ?Whether it is an injury or they hit adversity at some point. Last year with Manny having that breakthrough season, being healthy all year and proving he?s a 30-homer guy. That sets that confidence to say, ?Hey, I was able to do this and now I can take it to another level.? He is just playing with a lot of confidence this year, He knows there will be some bad days, but there are a lot more good days.?

You know, I just don't see any evidence at all that Manny wants brighter lights or has any kind of attitude problem that would lead to a clubhouse issue.

    • Mayo could DH versus LH SP, and play some 3rd va RHP. Ramon could enter in late as a defensive sub. That’s an everyday role with 1 off day a week.
    • I'll forgive him for both if he can keep pitching the way he has. Baker? you will probably see him this Summer in a Shuttle move or 2 to eat non leveraged innings, hopefully not in October.
    • A reliever for us. He’d be behind Coloumbe, Akin, Perez, and Vespi. We have a really good team. It’s crazy to just assume that the next prospect is always going to be better than what we currently have. We’re not just going to cast aside successful and trusted relievers to ride with Povich that may be our 5th best LH RP. It would be best for him to go to a team that isn’t trying to win on a nightly basis and see if his stuff plays at the MLB level.  Just because someone is an Orioles farmhand doesn’t give them a super power. They need to be able to get MLB hitters out with stuff. Nothing against Povich, I root for him, but we just DFA’d Yohan Ramirez that probably has a more playable arsenal out of the pen than Povich would. 97 with a plus sweeper.  Povich seems like Zimmerman 2.0. Hope he finds a stuff uptick. But it is what it is.
    • I saw a lot of comments in the game threads about how the Yankees can't hit, but they have playoff caliber pitching (in some spots). Yes, their closer throws a whiffle ball. Their starters can be feast or famine (depending on which side of the fence you're on). Prob 2 or 3 other very nice bullpen arms, including the most Bronx baseball name of all time, Ron Marinaccio. Ronnie Uncle Jimmy probably grew up breaking windows playing stick ball on Wilson Avenue. Anyway... Playoff caliber pitching with a somewhat toothless lineup could be great experience for us throughout the season. They'll continue to win games against bad teams and hang around in the division race all year, so each matchup we have with them will have some mild playoff intensity to it. In short, the Yankees could be a fun simulator for us this year. Finally, they're good for something.
    • Give me back Hunter Harvey for someone like Jud Fabian.
    • Sounds like a good opportunity for the O's to do their whole late inning comeback routine again.
    • When did teams start trading a top 20 prospect in baseball for a relief pitcher with a month of success.
