Shame that $50M is being wasted. If Jimenez was any good we wouldn't need to add another starter at all.

On the bright side, the Os are in the driver seat yet Ubaldo hasn't done well. If he improves like he is "supposed" to... boom.

Yeah, if Jimenez and Davis suddenly turn into their 2013 versions this team could really take off.

To be clear, I'm not exactly counting on either (unfortunately). Ubaldo, with some rehab starts, seems more likely to get on a good track confidence-wise. The Rays used the same ploy a few years ago when Shields (pretty sure?) lost the ability to throw effectively. I figure UJ to mow down some minor leaguers before coming back up.

Davis... may be the seemingly flawed TEX hitter for the remainder. Hope not, but I'm also not getting my hopes up.

Pretty good scenario for us if either regain their qi (chi).

Why?

For the record, I like Chen and think him and Gonzalez are both extremely underappreciated by O's fans. Just have never understood the idea that you must have a lefty in the rotation.

Take last year's Oriole team, some teams have trouble facing left-handed pitching.

If there are no lefties in the rotation you'd better have an overloaded bullpen from the left side, and the Orioles don't have that. They've got a left handed closer and TJ McFarland / Brian Matusz. Fact is L/R matchups make a big difference on many occasions.

And some teams have trouble with sinkerballers. And some have more trouble with power arms. Maybe 1 or 2 times a season are you able to manipulate your rotation based on matchups like that.

I'd rather have 5 good right handers than 4 good right handers and a mediocre lefty just because he's a lefty.

I don't see how this makes any sense either. Whether your starter is left handed or right handed doesn't affect what you need in the bullpen. I mean are you going to bring in a lefty specialist in the 3rd inning to face a left-hander? Of course not.

I won't disagree with you there.

However, that isn't the case with this team, because our lefty while not a TOR, is clearly not mediocre.

It does give a team a different look in a series. It's a a reason there are so many crafty lefties with jobs in MLB.

True, the name Jamie Moyer pops right into my mind. :)

I don't know of many teams without a lefty in their rotation.

True, it's not like left hand pitchers are rare, just in shorter supply.

No, you're going to bring in a lefty long man so that a lineup stacked with left-handed hitters is at a disadvantage, forcing the opposition to either go to their bench or accept having a lineup that is less than optimal at least one time through.

That only works, if your RH starter fails, and once you use the Lefty long man, then he is out of action for a couple of days.
