Well defense counts, and Lombardozzi was only 8% more efficient than creating runs last year than Schoop was. Look at it this way, last year Lombardozzi had a -0.4 rWAR despite his .288 BA (with no power and bad defense) while Schoop had a 1.5 rWAR (with has .244 OBP, good power and excellent defense).

This doesn't even get into the obvious upside difference between the two players.

Maybe Dan-o, Corn and I know how to look up sabremetrics and are "guessing" to some degree but it sure looks like the Orioles, Buck included, didn't have much faith in Lombardozzi and his .288 batting average.

I will readily admit we are guessing. It is about probabilities.

There is a chance that Schoop's bat doesn't improve to a noticeable degree and that his defense declines. He certainly wasn't known as a glove man in the minors and he is very large for a second baseman. I for one am a bit concerned he shows up for spring training at 250 pounds.

Sure, but there's a difference between probabilities and guessing. Maybe does get fat and never hits. No one knows. Still, he's a better choice than Lombardozzi.

For the record I wasn't implying fat. I think his frame has room for another 15 healthy pounds. Just not at second base.

I think he's athletic enough to handle second base with a large frame. I still think he has the skills for 3rd, but I don't see him hitting enough (and we have MM there). That said, I could see him putting up 30+ homeruns one of these years.

I am not predicting any 6 win years out of him but I do think he can be an average to above average player while he is under team control.

I would love to see improvement in next year, and I think it's not unreasonable to expect some.

Too many other important decisions in this roster to worry about 2nd for now.

Who else did we have in the minors this year at second? I just used Lombo as an example. Out of the guys we had Schoop may have very well been our best option. But why did he have to play virtually every day? If his bat was so bad, and he couldn't get on base, what would the reason be for not playing Flaherty there some as the season went along? Maybe even 2 days a week. I'm assuming you will all say it was because of his defense, and i get that. I just can't get over the fact that we may have a good defensive second baseman, but he only hits .209. That's simply not good enough is it?

Yeah it's ok. Since he was a 22 year old rookie and expected to improve.

Because of the strike out rate of the O's pitchers.

If you are going to run guys out there who can't strike folks out you best have a defense that can make plays.

      I think we can get that help and win a world series without trading Basallo for it. Just because we don't consider it a problem now in May, doesn't mean it won't be.

      Yeah, I'd put Hays' shot of throwing him out from that distance at about 80%+. He was completely dead to rights on a decent throw, it's a shame he chucked it 100 feet away. Hopefully, it's something he can get better at. His throws to third seem okay, but his throws to home are pretty brutal.

      No doubt Westburg! It looks to me that Mayo’s place on this team next season will be in RF/DH.

      Defense is important to me. I remember the excruciating development of Mountcastle, where some people insisted his defense was fine, even though he looked awful everywhere but first, and that’s where he ended up. I don’t want the same thing with Mayo or anyone else, for that matter, so sure, I’d trade Mayo(btw, Would you rather have Mayo or Westburg at 3B?) The main point is that Miller is wasted on the As and they aren’t being responsible owners unless they turn him into as much Future Asset as possible. Most of the teams that Can trade for him don’t need him.

      Next year’s problems/dilemmas will come when they arrive. And we can address those things when the appropriate time comes. This season we are playing for a World Series and only have one weak spot on the team… high leverage, weapon at the back of the pen (closer).

      Exactly, the issue is not arm strength it's accuracy which was discussed in another thread-it's a problem.  I think Cowser has looked much better in the field this year and could be the long term answer in LF, he's so fluid for his size, I think the routes will improve but the arm.....When he is struggling at the plate it seems to affects his confidence/defense.  He's also struggling to advance runners.

      Oh okay, you mentioned back-to-back World Series. I think we could add other pitchers not named Miller that could help, and it wouldn't have to include Basallo. Burnes will more than likely not be returning. Means? Wells and Irvin? This isn't what we need right now? okay, so next year? Again, I feel using those type of players in a trade would be better using it for a starter.
