Might need to add a hitter which will be easier said then done.

Despite the swoon of the last two games, I'm not overly concerned about adding a hitter. I would be happy to add a solid lefty in the bullpen (especially if Wesley Wright continues to struggle in rehab), DFA Matusz, and go to war. I don't want to see us gut our system.

The trade deadline is 27 days away. Our roster has settled in somewhat with Gausman in the rotation and Schoop back. That leaves to me the lefty in the pen issue and corner OF spots as biggest question marks. We don't have a lot in our system to deal. I still think the Jays do something significant and the Yankees always have the money. Considering how close the division is the GM's will play a big role this month. The offense does concern me. I know this slump will not last forever but to me we are still one bat short. We are going to have to ride out the starting pitching as it is. We have some solid bullpen options in the minors if we need them. Matusz invokes zero confidence. I hope Dan can pull something off to help. We are really going to need guys like Tilllman and Wieters to have big second haves to pull this thing off.

I agree, the team needs a hitter or two. Now that the bloom has worn off Parmelee and Reimold it's painfully obvious that the O's are still stuck with a bunch of AAAA players at the outfield corners (or LF and 1B if you are considering Davis as a RF).

The problem is that the farm system is not exactly deep at the moment. They might be able to turn Mike Wright and/or Tyler Wilson into an upgrade at COF, but then you are losing rotation depth for this season and next.

I'm sure this has been brought up in either the draft or minors section, but I can't find it...

What does our top 20-30 prospects look like AFTER the draft?

(And yes, I know our 2015 picks can't be traded this year)

  • 2 weeks later...
"Our team is in contention and there are a lot of teams in contention, so there is going to be a robust trade market," Duquette said. "But it is going to be a seller's market because there are so many teams in the hunt."

How many teams look to be sellers?

"Just a handful," Duquette said.

They have eight pending free agents to include players like Matt Wieters, Chris Davis and Wei-Yin Chen. But Duquette indicated there is very little chance that the Orioles would sell off one or two players while at the same time looking to add in other areas.

"Our pending free agents, the most value they could have would be to this year's ballclub and their contribution to this year's team. So any pending free agents, we'd like to see them play their best for the Orioles and help us accomplish our goals. That has been our focus all year," he said.

"We have some pretty solid depth to the team and within our organization. Our club is in the hunt and we want to stay in the hunt and we're going to do what we can to supplement our major league club."

I asked Duquette what he felt other teams would seek back from the Orioles in potential trade discussions?

"I'm sure the clubs that will be trading established major league players will be looking for future major league players. There are a lot of teams in the hunt with the second wild card and parity in the league. Our division is very competitive and all the teams are focused on winning. It is a tough division.

I do agree with DD that it is a seller's market as there are going to be more buyers than previous years. Good time to sell.

Maybe it is a good idea to go full-Marlins and sell all those expiring contracts, from a practical standpoint. The biggest issue dealing with that is possibly ticking off the incumbents like Adam Jones and Manny Machado. But really the Orioles could bring in a huge haul with some shrewd negotiations.

I don't think it's ever a good idea to go full-Marlins. Isn't the definition of "full-Marlins" trading off all of your players worth replacement-level or better while the champagne is still flowing in the World Series locker room?

Heck, I thought so too...but they traded Trea Turner!

I think the Orioles best option is to trade away these free agents. I don't think DD saying what he said precludes that at all. What he said was meant to encourage a sense of security amongst those players in an effort to remove distraction. The truth is though, if the Orioles are an under .500 team in two weeks they have no business keeping everyone and going for it, not when all but 6 other teams think they are in it.

Ed Encina says he had heard they had decided otherwise. I was not basing this on parsing Danspeak.

    • I can't imagine they have any expectation of Mateo going back to being a regular. If he's going on his annual hot streak, then it's smart to ride him until he gasses out, then shift him back to his reserve role. Holliday is taking that full-time spot soon enough.
    • Urias has a career 103 OPS+. Had two hits and a walk today plus another squared up ball for an out. I feel like Urias is a bit of a forgotten man, but he is a very solid defender and an average bat. That's probably not good enough for us but that is because we are spoiled with plus guys at basically every position. I agree on Westburg though, if Mayo doesn't end up with 3B, Westburg is adequate there and so far his bat can play for a corner IF.  Hitting on Westburg and Gunnar the way we have really pushes our system over the top. These are guys we weren't necessarily counting on but they are turning into bona fide stars. Only question is how to find room for them all. Westburg 3B makes Mayo the heir apparent at 1B. Somehow he needs to push Mountcastle but he's not a FA until 2027. Maybe he takes Santander's spot and Kjerstad keeps waiting.
    • Interesting.  You know Gunnar and De La Cruz are the same age, yet Gunnar's put up 9.4 career WAR to poor Elly's 2.7.  If anyone was overrated during the last series it was Nick Lodolo.
    • I wondered about that too.  Maybe he'll take his turn on the IL when Grayson is ready to return.
    • It’s silly to be judging Bradfield at this stage.  I don’t know if he’ll be good or not, but I know you need to give him a couple of months at least before you have any clue.
    • Anyone else notice Kremer shaking his hand or fingers the last couple games and looking like he’s in pain?  I’m surprised Ben and Kevin didn’t pick up on it today.  It looked obvious to me.
    • Povich is a starter. It makes no sense to bring him up and put him in Baumann’s role. Especially not in a short term situation when he’s pitching so well starting in Norfolk.    also - it kind of feels like Baumann is just a placeholder. When wells and/or Grayson come back, there isn’t another logical move other than maybe option akin, who has pitched dramatically better than Baumann. But I can’t imagine Baumann surviving both wells and Grayson coming back without another injury.    I don’t think Elias is doing anything crazy other than holding onto assets with value until it’s necessary to let them go. Is Tate probably better in the long term? Yeah. But he’s also coming off a year long injury and they don’t want to overuse him. Let them use his option for the flexibility, manage his innings, let Baumann either prove he can rediscover early 2023 form or get dfa’d in the coming weeks while eating whatever innings we need him to. Not like he’s costing us games at the moment.
