Matusz - Is it possible?

I think the guy is terrible....watched him his whole career....he can put some decent "stats" up as long as it doesn't have anything to do with winning, however he's real good at "cherrypicking" a win from someone else.....please let some other team pay this guy....if he hadn't been a first round draft pick, no one would remember his name by now.

Matusz has been real protected by not having to stay in longer than his usual inning. Brach, Roe, Mac, Garcia and so forth have all had to come out and pitch multiple inning stints for the team. Buck has had to baby Matusz(the guy that wants to start), and really not let him absorb a beating and keep his artificial ERA down. He is a must not retain. He's one of the players that were a part of the losing culture that managed to hang on. Now it's time for him to go.

Matusz has thrown more than an inning ten times this year. He's had a solid season. I'm not saying they definitely should bring him back, but I get sick of him being scapegoated.

So, let me try and pin you down. You do or don't think he should be tendered a contract. If non-tendered do they offer him a short term deal for less money?

He's frustrating for me. I've watched him at times this year when I saw him use a three pitch mix effectively including the CH. It's a much better pitch for him, he seems to have rediscovered it. A couple nights ago he looked bad. Last night even though he beat Ortiz I thought he got away with the pitch.

His IS% is at 34% and last year he was at 20%, much more acceptable. Last year he was overwhelmingly used when ahead or tied and this year it's reversed. I'm not convinced he's in the right role but I'm not sure I want to see him starting.

He's not the scapegoat for this year. As a LOOGY he's been great. He's going to make too much in Arb to bring back next year and I'll never forgive him for the Moustakas HR in game one of the ALCS last year.

In fact I could see Matusz going out to the NL West and possibly becoming a #5 type starter. Huge ballparks. No DH. Weaker lineups. But for us he shouldn't have even been paid what he was this year.

I want to cogitate on it after the season is over and I can get my hands around what I think the priorities are. But put it this way: fangraphs says he's been worth $4.7 mm this year, and that his average value has been $4.9 mm over the last four years. And that's just about what he's going to cost us in arbitration, I suspect. So I think he is "worth what he's going to be paid in arbitration," more or less. It's just a matter of whether this particular team has a better use for the money than paying it to a decent LOOGY. My guess is, if we non-tender him, he will get that money somewhere else. This isn't a case of a guy whose arbitration value greatly exceeds his free agent value. Right now, I'm leaning towards non-tendering, but not because I think he's been awful, more because I think we have some depth in the bullpen even if we let him go.

I think Matusz could be valuable on a 2/7 type of deal, but he won't accept that and I wouldn't go any higher.
