Would you want Shields in a salary dump? Or keep trotting Ubaldo out there?

I wouldn't take Shields even for free. In his most recent start, he got knocked out in the 2nd inning. That's 3 shellackings in a row. His ERA is something like 21.00. Thanks the baseball gods that the White Sox got him and not the Orioles. Now the Sox have a multi-million dollar mop-up man.

Shields' last 4 starts:. 11.1 innings, 32 hits, 27 runs, 26 earned, 13 walks, 6 strikeouts, 7 home runs.

That's a 20.65 ERA and a 3.97 WHIP.

First pitcher in MLB history to allow 7+ runs in the first three innings in four consecutive starts.

Shields pitched 6.67 innings of 1-run ball against the Twins tonight.

In his previous outing, he pitched 5-PLUS innings of 3-run ball against the Red Sox at Fenway Park (he had pitched 5 innings of 1-run ball, ceded 2 base-runners to start the 6th inning, and reliever Matt Albers let both of those inherited runners score.)

He had previously had 4 consecutive horrendous starts, 3 of which came after his trade from the Padres to the White Sox.

Shields pitched 6 innings of 2-run ball against the Yankees today at Comiskey Park II.

He ceded a 2-run home run to Chase Headley in the top of the 2nd inning for all of the Yankees' runs.

Shields has now had 3 consecutive non-disastrous starts. That should be at least mildly relieving to the White Sox after the way that he started with them in his first 3 starts after they acquired him from the Padres last month.

In those 7.67 inning, he threw only 93 pitches, 61 of them for strikes.

He appears to have turned his previously disastrous season (since being acquired by the White Sox) around.

James Shields is available for trade, according to FOX Sports' Jon Morosi.

Shields boasts a 1.71 ERA over his last six starts with the White Sox after struggling for the first three months of the 2016 season. He still has a rough 4.68 ERA and 1.48 WHIP overall and he's owed quite a bit of money (with the Padres handling a chunk). It'll be an interesting trade market and stretch run for the 34-year-old right-hander.

Shields has been extremely lucky (Stats are from a post I saw on reddit and wow):

.203 babip, 4.50 k/9, 100% lob, 4.85 fip, 5.14 xfip, 95% LOB over his last 6 starts...

Ugh can't edit, it's 95% LOB, not 100% obviously :-)

No idea what it would take to get him, but he's signed for the next two seasons, with a club option for 2019. The O's would be on the hook for $10M per season for 2017 & 2018.

That is if he doesn't exercise his opt-out at the end of this season.

(SEPTEMBER 15th)

Shields pitched 6 innings of 1-run ball against the Indians today, while striking out 8.

He did give out 4 free passes, though (3 walks and 1 hit batsman.)

He had a very good stretch of 6 consecutive starts between late June and late July, a bad series of 4 starts in early and mid-August, and then has recovered to having pitched reasonably well in 4 out of his last 5 starts.
