Glad to hear from you Jon W!  I was worried that you had not contributed eruditions lately.  But what do you really think about Josh Hader's loss?  ;-)

I would love to contribute eruditions more but my silly network at work has become incompatible with the Hangout.  I'll try to post a little more!

Between this and Baseball Reference It is almost as if your work doesn't want you spending time talking baseball.

First, David Price has always seemed like a good man and one who "deserved" the payday even if he now becomes recent example #1 of why investing so much in pitchers is always dangerous.

Second, Weams, you are correct above, but for unintentional reasons.  You are right that comparing the loss of Tillman to Price is a non starter.  However, only because the situation is MUCH MUCH more dangerous and relevant IF the injuries impact the season for Baltimore.

Setting the personalities aside here, there are only a handful of teams that can afford to sign the types of contracts that go to the top shelf free agent pitchers.  We always bemoan the fact that the Orioles are not in on them.  But what everyone seems to miss is that it really isn't that Baltimore or other teams cant afford the commitment.  It ultimately boils down to the simple fact that they cannot manage the risk.

If Boston, or the Cubs, Dodgers, Yankees or say Nationals sign and then subsequently lose someone like David Price, well they can afford it because they either have the depth to overcome it or the pockets to simply go get what they need to replace him.  THAT is the real reason that Boston can afford him and Baltimore cant.  And Weams, THAT is why Tillman's shoulder right now has more potential impact on the AL East than David Price.  Therefore I complete agree with your statements above and I join others hoping for the best for David Price.  But put me in the column that sees this as being potentially a big deal for Boston, but not as big a deal as the current questions surrounding Tillman's shoulder.

Or at least that is how I see it...

Still see it the same. Bosox are ok with or without price. The news has worsened regarding Tillman and the Os don't have an easy fix.

Quote

Burnett knew his left UCL wasn’t right so he did something you hear few, if any, pitchers attempting to accomplish: he tried to tear it. He went back to the Legacy Golf Club room at which he was staying while rehabbing in Tempe, Arizona, stacked pillows up against his bed’s headboard, and started throwing baseballs with as much violence and velocity as he could into them.

They may be OK without Price but they are definitely better with him.

To put it another way -- without Price, considering what they gave up for Sale, I think they are a bit worse than last year's team.

Same goes for the Orioles and Tillman.  I don't think they become terrible but they would be a bit worse than last year.

    • I don't mind the showboating.  In fact I kind of like it when its not against us and its not the Yankees.  I actually chuckled at Soto showboating after his 'we're still down by 2 in the later innings' shot last night.  I think, to at least a small degree, it needs to continue to get/keep people interested in the game (not me, and I'm sure not most here, but some).  The game needs more personalities, and it has some  with guys like De La Cruz, Tatis, Soto and many others - let those guys cook and let them show you who they are (in a good/fun way). I liked how cocky Skenes seemed on the mound during that prospects ST game in March.  If you can back it up, bat flip and trot after a home run all you want, as far as I'm concerned. Its no different than the NFL allowing those group celebrations in the end zone - it adds to the fun, and if you score a TD, you deserve the chance.  Hitting a HR is hard - if you do it, celebrate a little bit, by all means.  It's supposed to be fun after all. And if you don't like it, hitting the guy is definitely not the answer anyway.  All that does is put a target on Adley and/or Gunnar, and that's not what anyone wants, least of all Corbin Burnes or any other O's pitcher.
    • But there is a big difference in being in direct sunlight and not. Either way, I realize others like the 4:05 start time. I just happened to like having a game to watch on Saturday nights.
    • Soto on the IL is good for the Orioles. But I do not support plunking him.
    • With the draft a little over two months out, I’ve started paying more attention to mock drafts and am curious who people think we might be interested in both at 22 and with the Gunnar ROTY pick at 32. Curious to see both what folks think the Elias/sig WILL do, and what you would want to target.    In early rounds, we have overwhelmingly targeted colllege hitters. So I will always guess that is what the orioles will end up doing.  college hitters orioles might take IF they are there: cam smith, carson benge, billy amick, James tibbs Looking at the talent in the draft and our farm system, I wouldn’t mind shots at high school ss options, even if I still think it’s not the most likely outcome from our draft history. You don’t pick for need, but there seem to be a decent number of hs as ranked in this range.    hs ss I would be interested in: Theo gillen, kellon Lindsey, Carter Johnson. I’m sure there are more, but those three stand out a bit.    Anyone else with thoughts? I think the drop off at college pitcher is significant after the top 3, and don’t think we’ll take the risk associated with hs pitchers, especially in the first round.
    • I think it's premature and perhaps unrealistic to expect any big substantive updates at this point.   I'm sure there are things going on behind the scenes, and they can stay behind the scenes for the time being so far as I'm concerned.  I suspect we will hear substantive stuff from Rubenstein from time to time when something significant happens.
    • Pretty sure you can make this statement about many issues. Clark is one of the biggest problems in baseball and the sooner the MLPBA jettisons him the better off the game will be.  I love the pitch clock and was a big proponent of it when I saw it used in the minors. Players have mostly adjusted to it, nd pitch or hitter clock violations are pretty rare.  As for the pitcher's injuries, I tend to agree with you. The max effort of pitchers trying to create velocity and/or spin rates can not be good for arms. I also don't know how they would study something like this. How can you study how much time is needed between repeating a violent unnatural act with your arm before it breaks?  This is lot like trying to figure out why some guys have a "rubber arm" and can pitch with less rest than others. It's all a hard thing to study, but with stat cast data available for players throughout the minor leagues (to teams, not the public unfortunately), they may be able to track guys a little better and correlate what pitches, spin rates, and mount of pitches break guys more frequently.
    • Yup.  Soto is a clown.  I just hope Burnes doesn't go into business for himself given that he's a vet and all.  The best thing Burnes can do is to show them up by going a CG and celebrating with an Anthony Edwards DX symbol to their bench post game.
