Mexico, Venezuela, and Italy all finished round one with 1-2 records.  Mexico is eliminated while Venezuela and Italy will play the tie breaker game.

This despite Mexico beating Venezuela last night as well as surrendering less runs in the tourney (28) than Venezuela has (32) :S

Huh? They need to get the understanding of these tiebreaker rules sorted out among the people covering the event! I was actually watching to the end of the game last night, and the announcers (including Gary Thorne) said over and over that Venezuela was the eliminated team based on the runs allowed tiebreaker. This after the announcers reported during the Colombia-DR game that Colombia would automatically win the pool if they won the game, then later corrected it to say that it depended on the score and they would not necessarily place first with a win.

Team Mexico seemed to be celebrating as if they had survived, so perhaps they were confused as well.

Apparently Mexico is filing a protest. Somebody messed up.

But confused reigned in the wee hours at Estadio de Beisbol Charros de Jalisco, as both teams and the news media remained unclear which team would play Italy - which allowed 1.05 runs per defensive inning - in Monday's tiebreaker. Finally, an announcement from Major League Baseball around 2 am CT that Italy and Venezuela would meet for the final second-round spot out of Pool D cleared up the confusion.

Or so it seemed.

Mexico's manager, Edgar Gonzalez, questioned whether his team's partial inning against Italy - it gave up five ninth-inning runs, but failed to record an out in the 10-9 walk-off loss - should count in the computations.

His brother, Los Angeles Dodgers star and Mexico first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, was even more pointed, claiming the Mexicans were told before the game that a two-run victory would be sufficient for the team to reach the tiebreaker. He later told reporters the conclusion would make him think harder before participating in future WBCs.

Interesting watching Venezuela trying to navigate their limited bullpen.  They only have five relievers (and one position player) available to pitch and their starter hit his pitch limit early.

What happens if it goes extras and the last pitcher gets to his pitch count?

Forfeit?

Position player pitching?

And now Rougned Odor knocks in the go ahead run with a ball barely off the top of the wall.   He thought he had a homer so he only got to first, but he has given Venezuela a lead nonetheless.   K-Rod will be in in the bottom of the 9th to try to nail it down.

BTW, that's Rougned Odor, not his brother Rougned Odor.   In case you were wondering.
